FROM THE EDITOR How on earth did four years go by so quickly? I feel like it was just August of 2006, and I had just pranced onto campus with my mom and brother. With a roommate I wasn’t quite sure I would like, and intentions for an American Studies, degree, I had no idea where my college career would take me. My first two years here were pretty rough, on a personal front, but now here I am—and I’ve somehow ended up with some of the best memories of my life. Just last night, I turned in my senior thesis, and I’ve never been more proud of myself Why did God do this to me? Why is He so intent on blessing me with such abundance? I’ve spent three years working with the newspaper and its awesome staff. I’m living in a great big house with my two best friends—we end up talking every night, and weeping together about the goodness of the Lord—and my future seems so bright. I never thought I would become such a Montreat cliche! I talk about building community all the time. Seriously. I made fun of it for months when I first heard about it, but now I really understand its purpose. Building community has nothing to do with routine attendance of chapel or convo, or knowing all the names of the people on your hall, or even how many Student Activities you go to. Building community means supporting each other through conversation and prayer. I’ve learned, too slowly, the importance of appreciating my professors, the staff, and encouraging the personal and spiritual growth of the man or woman next to you. It means more to take an hour to sit and talk with a troubled friend than to sit yawning in the back of convo. You want to convo to matter? Pay attention, and talk about it with your circle of friends. Turn the distant lesson into an impactful moment for your life, even if it’s small. You want something to change at Montreat? Tell SGA, and give them, with your assent, the power they need to make things change. You want your voice to be heard? Write about it and share it with The Whetstone. People remember the articles when they personally know the author. In class, if you have a question, ask it. Trust me, you won’t be the only one who wanted to ask. Your willingness to step out of your own head and reach out will turn a college experience into a life experience. I can’t believe I’m graduating in just a few short days. I’ve tried on my cap and gown twice, and each time, I find myself more staring into the mirror, wondering who that grown-up lady is. In these last years, my life and my heart have changed almost as often as my hair color, and I wish I had more space here to speak to the people who have walked with me. To my great pleasure. I’d like to announce my formidable successor to the crown of The Whetstone, Arilicia Adkins. She’s proved to be a great asset to the newspaper, and I’m glad to call her my friend. I’m confident that The Whetstone will continue along an exciting path with Arilicia at the helm. To Amanda, Arilicia, and Jared—I leave The Whetstone in your capable hands. Above everything else, I have felt so incredibly accepted and loved in your company. Thank you for letting me lead you in haphazard circles that somehow resulted in a newspaper every month.
