iport; What Basketball has done for me - Senior Highlight Ayjae Jackson Unlike the other seniors, I’ve only had the opportunity to play here for two years. Being a member of the team has taught me a lot. I have a position that requires me to put my teammates first every time I step on the court. It feels nice to know that someone cares about you on and off the court. One thing that I will always remember about Montreat basketball is the day Coach Craig said, “It’s not about you. Once you leave here, nobody cares.” This statement is so true. No matter how negative it may sound, it’s true. In the real world, nobody is going to care if you are late for work because you’re going to get fired. No mat ter how much I hated ac tive stretch, I was looking forward to circle stretch. I always hoped that Craig would not call on me for my opinion, because most of the time I did not know what “the thought of the day” was until he read it. Basketball here at Mon treat has its up and downs, but you get used to it quickly. Five-dollar meals and a couple of t-shirts... we totally don’t look like a team! And it sucks that I couldn’t play on senior night because of an injury. I had a couple of tricks up my sleeve for Craig that night; I was going to shoot my first career 3, an ally layup thrown by Chacie Bullock, and a pass thrown off the backboard to me. Ok, well... maybe not the backboard pass, ‘cause Craig would have taken me out in a snap. But to sum up: I would like to thank Kera, Janel, Britta ny, Boone, and the rest of the team for an awesome regular season 20-9. The opening weekend for the Lady Cavaliers was a learning experience, and they had their first outdoor practice against a tough opponent. After the weekend in Savannah, things began to turn Playing basketball at Montreat has been an up and down experience for four long years. Coming from a winning program in high school, to a super losing program was a very difficult change. Only winning five games my freshman year and playing as a post player at 5’3”, 120 pounds was a definite struggle that I Joke about now. Although the bas ketball program at Mon treat doesn’t get a lot (i.e. travel suits, team shoes, more than $5 a meal, etc.), I still have gready enjoyed my time and experiences playing with the team. We got a new coach my sophomore year who has definitely turned the program around. I have gotten to meet some very good friends and amazing people while being able to compete in a sport that I love. Senior night this year was a very run experience. It was good to win and to have my family and friends there to support me. I received some nice pictures and posters from my coaches and team mates and about a million packages of Oreos (Boone and I love the vanilla kind!). Although senior night was fun, I am most excited about our 20-10 record this year. After graduation in May, I plan on moving to Charleston and continuing my educa tion in either business or sports administration. We’ll see what happens. During my three years at Montreat, I have gained perspective on what is im portant to me in my life. The Lord has been good to me, and not just with basketball. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game, but He worked in me to appreciate the importance of working just as hard in the classroom as I do on the court. I have made lasting friendships with my teammates and that bond is one that is hard to explain, but I know they know how important they are to me. Most impor tantly, I want to leave a legacy for my son, Isaiah, so he can be proud of his dad for all his achieve ments, especially my col lege degree. around for us. We regained our focus and composure and are now at 4-4 for the season thus far. The season holds a lot of promise for our team, and we are excited about the things to come. Games against Mars Hill and a tournament in Rome, Georgia have been slated for this week and we are hungry for more wins. It’s nice to finally be outside again, and keep looking for more posts on the Lady Cavaliers season.
