FROM THE EDITOR March is my favorite month of the year. For me, March brings a much-needed rest (spring break), my birthday (March 28th), and the season "spring" (begins March 20th)—^because Fm so over all this snow. More importantly, March is Women's History Month. Since Fm a woman, this is highly important to me. In the early nineteenth century, women were considered second- class citizens. They were limited to the home and the care of the children (which really isn't a bad life), but they were still seen as less then a man. They were to be obedient wives. They could not own property (once married), sign contracts, or vote. It was improper for women to travel alone or speak in public. Women were looked at as objects of beauty, and even religionist pastors would teach strict and defined sex roles. Sadly, there was the belief (started by a man, of course) that participating in physical or highly intellectual activities would damage a female reproductive system. I seriously have no clue how they thought that up. I do believe that women and men have defined roles, but women should by no means be limited to being "housewives" unless they want to. Women like Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod, Elizabeth Stanton, Margaret Sanger, and Mary Church Terrell are just a few reasons why over half of Montreat College has rights today. Ladies, this month we should remember the women who made history fighting for our rights, and remember, as women, to live life to the fullest.
