Phi Theta Lambda Gloria Sainio What is it? A secret society? Business time? A monthly gathering of students who, no matter their major, meet together once a month to discuss ways to take over the world? Close enough. Phi Beta Lambda is the nation’s larg est formal business student organization and we have a chapter right here at Montreat College. PBL is a great way to network with fellow business students, business owners, managers, professors, and industry profession als. PBL’s mission statement is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. Who can join PBL? Any business majors, business minors, CIS, communications, human services, etc. Be ing in PBL is an incredible resume booster for anyone interested in the wellbeing of their future. Phi Beta Lambda’s goals are to: 1. Develop competent, aggressive business leader ship. 2. Strengthen the confidence of students in them selves and their work. 3. Create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise. 4. Encourage members in the development of indi vidual projects that contribute to the improvement of home, business, and community. 5. Develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism. 6. Encourage and practice efficient money manage ment. 7. Encourage scholarship and promote school loy alty. 8. Assist students in the establishment of occupa tional goals. 9. Facilitate the transition from school to work. So what does being in PBL entail? We meet once a month for anywhere from 30-50 minutes. We talk about the weather, cafeteria food, and business-y things. Okay, that is not a real word but that’s okay. I can do that. I have special rights. Jared Nielsen is our chapter president, David Friedrichs vice president, Seth McCleary treasurer, and Caitlin Dempsey secretary. Everyone who is a member of PBL has to pay $30 in dues in order to keep our chapter funded. There will also be a service project we will be working on this spring, helping out with the homeless shelter here in Black Mountain. Finally, we will be going to Charlotte for the"' State Leadership Conference in April where we will participate in various fun activities. So, if this sounds like something you would like to participate in, let any of our officers know as soon as possible. It really is something worthwhile in which to invest your time. |Page4l Febuaryl5.2011 I Lady Cavs Sports Caitlyn Chambers Basketball Montreat Women’s Basketball has been on fire this year! Standing right now with a record of 22-3 and currently second place in their conference, they have exhibited some tremen dous things. And to add icing on the cake, they beat Union College twice. First they beat them at home, which hasn’t hap pened in 40 years, but they just recently beat them on their own (Union’s) turf, too. Not only does the team have an outstanding record, but they also have certain players who have been contributing tremendously. Mykiea Russell, a junior transfer, put up 37 points against Virginia Intermont. It was the second-most points any Lady Cav has scored in a game. Along with scoring so high, she walked away with a dou ble double (which means she scored double digits in two of the statistics tracked through the game). Another great player who has brought a lot to the Montreat team is junior transfer Ebony Battle. In the most recent game against Union, Battle led the team with 23 points. Both Battle and Russell have been honored with being named player of the week, which is great for the Women’s Basketball program here. This year the Womens basketball team has not only distributed great teamwork, but they have also shown a great sense of pride in their school. Montreat Women have three more season games until tourna ment and hopefully they will end with big wins. Being a play er on the team, I realize that if we continue to work together and stay positive we could play great in the rest of the season, and we could win tournament as well. The Lady Cavaliers’ last home game is Wednesday, Feb. l6 against rival school, Milligan College. This is not only a big night for the team, but for the seniors Lady Cavs. This will be their (seniors) last home game, so come out to support not just the team, but the seniors as well. Softball As the Montreat Women’s Basketball team season is coming to a close, another one of our women’s teams’ seasons is just beginning. This year’s 2010-2011 Montreat Softball team has begun their season with a great start. Senior center fielder, Jamie Lok- ken, has a great, positive attitude about this season. “We have plenty of talent and potential to be a great team,” she said. This year’s team is one of the strongest teams, and has every thing to make it to nationals as long as we work together.” Currently ranked second in preseason, our Lady Cavs won two games tfiis past week against Emmanuel College. This year has a lot of potential for Montreat’s softball program- “If we live up to our own expectations we should have a really great year,” exclaimed head coach Lee Swanson. “I’m looking forward to a great season!” For more sports news andfor game schedules, look for the athletics newsletter in your student email, or visit WWW. montreatcavaliers. com.
