ATHLETICS The Savings are Coming^ T he Savings are Coming. Nick Gerstung Yes, you heard right, “The saving are coming”, but not form your local stores, but from your local goalkeeper, Caroline Mellard, who for the second straight week is named “AAC Defensive Player of the Week”. With a total of 22 saves from shots and corner kicks at it’s only been two games. Caroline has helped lead the team to a 1-0-1 record so far as the Cavaliers opened up their AAC conference play by defeating Milligan College 1-0 and tying Columbia College 0-0 in double overtime. Caroline recorded 4 total saves against the Buffaloes on Tuesday and had a key role in helping preserve the team’s 1-0 lead by clearing the ball repeatedly from Milligan’s six corner kicks by punching it away. In Sat urday’s game against Columbia College, she continued her strong performance by recording 6 more saves and defending against 6 more corner kicks as well. But Caroline greatest performance thus far came in the 117th minute when Columbia College’s most dangerous player slipped in behind and went 1v1 against her, but Caro line managed to stay clutch and blocked the Koala’s shot. The Cavaliers have not lost since their first game of the season against #15 ranked Northwood University Florida on August 27th and have now recorded 3 shutout games in a row. With thanks to Caroline and the Lady Cavaliers soccer team for great performances so far, the Lady Cav’s are looking to continue their shutout streak with a win over fellow conference opponent Virginia Interment this Wednesday the 19th at 4:00pm at the Howard Fisher Memorial Field in Black Mountain. The Lady Cavaliers would love to see your support, see you there! Setting Up For Success Nick Gerstung Lady Cavs move to 2-0 in the AAC after defeating Virginia Interment Tuesday the 11th. Both Coach Kamer and Coach Motheral were very impressed with the things the girls brought and hope to see it in every match played. Tuesday’s conference match against the Virginia Interment Lady Cobras turned into a successfully night, with the Ladies winning three straight games; the scores being 25-16, 25-8, 25-15. Sophomore right side, Lauren Owen had an outstanding match Tuesday, leading the team with nine kills and three aces while senior outside, Alyssa Kauffman also had a standout night, contributing eight kills and six digs. But however, none of those kills would have been possible without the setter duo, freshman phenomenon, Sara Roth, and outstanding junior, Olivia Van Deusen, who had total of 18 assists. Junior Libero, Dani Najera, also tallied six digs for the night. Thursday the 13th, the Lady Cavaliers began their journey to Milligan Col lege to face the Buffaloes, who are currently undefeated in the AAC. The Lady Cavs started off on a bad foot, losing two straight games, but the Lady Cavaliers didn’t give up so easy. The Ladies fought back in game three and four, but un fortunately came up short in the 5th game. The scores of the match were 21-25, 22-25; 27-17, 25-14, 13-15 While being a very hard loss, several good things came out of it. Sopho more powerhouse, Lauren Owen led the team by putting away 15 kills. However, senior middle, Hannah Bostic was close, taking home 13 more kills. While fresh man phenomenon, Sara Roth, once again tallied up 25 assists while the other half of the duo Olivia Van Deusen brought in 20 assists. Junior libero, Dani Najera also had a very successful night with 30 digs. The Lady Cavs are now 2-1 in conference play and will face their next conference opponent Tuesday, September 18 at home.
