A New Day continued from page 1: colleges and universities. Montreat has begun to make connections with leaders in the homeschool arena and will continue to do so here in North Carolina and wherever there are good opportunities for recruitment. Aside from recruitment, Dr. Maurer is also enacting plans here on campus to fortify the academics, challenge students, and create an environment of academic rigor and dedication. He intends to strengthen and grow the Honors Program. It is still young and he hopes to increase its numbers and extend it into new academic areas. Another initiative would be to strengthen Montreat’s offerings in the natural sciences. These areas Montreat will be proactively addressed this academic year. Montreat is going through a time of change and many of us do not know what to expect for our school. We all want to know what this year holds for us. Dr. Maurer said, “The encouragement I would offer is that it really is a new day at Montreat College. It’s a fresh start, it’s a new beginning; we’re charting a new path. Momentum is really with us. There’s a lot of energy and good morale on campus. As we gain momentum, we are going to see more and more people offering to help the college in tangible ways.” So long as the student body is committed to progressing. Montreat will move forward. The attitude and proac tivity on the part of students themselves counts as much as new leadership, new recruitments and new academic initiatives. In Maurer’s words, “The most important thing students can do is be good students. There is a very fine education for the taking here and if students take advantage of that, it will benefit them for a lifetime. And so I think the very most important thing students can do is to energetically dive into the opportunity here for a great intellectual, relational, emotional and spiritual education.” Emily Baker, a student here at Montreat said of Montreat’s academic opportunities, “We all have the potential to learn and gain knowledge, and when we choose either consciously or unconsciously to abandon this honor and responsibility we are not only selling ourselves short, but we are ignoring the brilliance and unique abilities the Lord has instilled in each of us.” CAUEEU & (:ALLIX(i WEEK By Cassidy O’Brien For the first time in school history. Montreat College will be having a Career & Calling Week, all thanks to the time and dedication Mr. Tom Oxenrider has invested. From Nov. 3-5, students will be attending sessions and workshops which will prepare them for their futures. Students will have four opportunities to hear from the Main Session speakers: Tom Nelson, Steven Garber, Donald Opitz and Byron Borger. Dr. Jim Shores and his wife Carol will be joining these sessions with theatrical performances. Tuesday and Wednesday, Montreat students will spend the day attending a variety of different workshops, from guest speakers like award-winning filmmaker Guillermo Navarro to some of the professors here at Montreat College like Brian Joyce. Dr. Flowers expressed, “I believe that Montreat College students and faculty will experience an exhilarating Journey through plenary sessions and workshops that bring deeper understanding to our pursuit of a calling to vocation and work.”
