Little Lights: Whitney Dumford
By Joshua Isiguzo
Ellen G. White once
espoused, “God tests and
proves us by the common
occurrences of life. It is
the little things which
reveal the chapters of the
heart.”
We have a way of not no
ticing the little things in
life, but it is those ignored
minuscule details that
make the greater picture
magnificent. It is in this
vein that the Whetstone
sought out one of the
small guardians who
works in the background
unnoticed but wholly ef
fective.
Whitney Dumford is a
quiet, beautiful, intel
ligent young lady who is
responsible for the simple
yet aesthetically attractive
drawings on the student
activities board. Her
impressionistic doodles
bring life to the simple
world of “event an
nouncements”. Whitney, a
freshman at Montreat, has
been a frequent attendee
of the summer conferenc
es held at the college. She
then fell in love with the
enamoring landscape and
opted to pursue her tertiary
education here.
She loves creating things
using different methods
and media (take time to
check out her Etsy shop if
you can). She is inspired
by words and daily occur
rences, picking up memo
ries and thoughts from the
smallest of things. Her
favorite professor is the
ever-enchanting Lloyd Da
vis, who she calls the most
sarcastic but funniest sage
she has ever met. Whitney
does a good job of playing
out what Christ hopes we
become, small lights illu
minating in the background
(yes it is a Lecrae song).
We are not to seek any
fame or glory for the things
we do, whether great or
small. All that is required
is our investment in lives,
utilizing even the small
est of our gifts. So take
some time to stare at those
doodles the next time you
go by the board in Belk.
