Billy Graham *s 'My Answer DEAR DR. GRAHAM: I get so discouraged over our teenage son who seems to have no goals for the future and no career plans. He has always been a faithful churchgoer, but he just doesn’t seem to have any motivation. What can I do to help hlm?-Mrs. G.M. DEAR MRS. G.M.: We cannot run the lives of our children for them, and sometimes it is agonizing to watch them struggle or seem to make little progress. Nevertheless, I believe you can encourage him in some ways that might help him. It would be difficult for me to know exactly why your son seems to have so little motivation. He may, for instance, have a fear about the future or an uncertainty about what he wants to do in life, and this uncertainty makes him want to forget about the future. He may see the way many peopie -- both his own age and older -- make mistakes in life and are unhappy, and he wants to guard against this somehow. He may be insecure about his own abilities, and is fearful of attempting things when he might fail. Many other reasons could be given. Pray for your son, and encourage him. Do ail you can to compliment him about the things he does achieve; it may help him realize he need not be fearful of the future. Do not be afraid to talk about the ways God has led and guided you in the past. More than anything else, he needs to know that he is in God’s hands if he has committed his iife to Jesue Christ, and he can trust the future to him. Be thankfui that your son is not experiencing some of the problems others his age are encountering, especiaiiy when they have no Christian background. And don’t be too impatient, it is better for your son to take time to discover God’s purpose for his life, than to jump into something which is not God’s will. History of Hymns by William J. Reynolds the o^er Jesus calls ui tumult Of our lifers wild, restless sea; Day by day his sweet voice soundeth, Saying, **Christians, follow me I Jesus walked along the shores of the Sea of Galilee and saw two men fishing. The brothers, Simon and Andrew, were fishermen by trade. Jesus invited them 10 leave their nets and come with him. He promised to make them fishers of men. And they followed him. This stoiy recorded by the gospel writers Matthew, Mark, and Luke, is the basis for the hymn by Cecil Frances Alexander. The Sea of Galilee can be beautiful and calm, but it can also be rough and fearsome. It is this imagery that Mrs. Alexander uses to describe “life’s wild, restless sea.’’ As Andrew and Simon responded to Jesus’ invitation, the hymn urges us to respond and Give our hearts to thine obedience. Serve and love thee best of all. Mrs. Alexander was born in Ireland. As a young girl she showed great concern for persons in unfortunate circumstances. With her sister, she began a school for the deaf. Many miles she walked taking food to the hungiy and caring for those who were ill. An English lecturer, organist, and recitalist composed the music for these words in 1887. William J. Jude was born in Suffolk, England, and his musical career took him throughout Great Britain and Australia giving recitals and lectures. His name appears in our hymnals because of this tune that was written almost a century ago for Mrs. Alexander’s words, “Jesus Calls Us.’’ The tune is appropriately named “Galilee.” NEXT WEEK’S HYMN; “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” PRINCETON, N.J.-About one-third of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the evangeiist Rev. Jerry Falweli, founder of Morai Majority. Persons in a recent nationwide Gaiiup survey were asked to rate Falweli on a 10-point attitude scaie caiied the Stapei Scalometer, which measures intensity of feeling, both positive and negative. A total of 7% give Falweil a “highiy favorable” rating. This rating is based on the top two positions (plus 5 and plus 4). Another 28% give him a ‘‘mildly favorable” rating, based on the next three positions (pius 3, plus 2, and plus 1). One person in three (36%) do not express an opinion or say they do not know enough about Faiweii to give him a rating. Protestants are more likely to give Falweli a ‘‘highly favorable” rating than are Catholics, 10% to 3%. Southerners tend to be higher on him than do persons in other areas of the nation. Survey respondents who place themselves to the right of center in terms of their own political philosophy give :Falweli a ‘‘highly favorable” rating of 13% compared to 4% among those who place themselves on the “middle-of-the- road” positions on the scale, while 8% on the left give Falweli this rating. Continued from Page 1 Neither Sutherland, his wife, or 6 child were injured, McSwain said, but the fire largely destroyed their home and about $200 worth of personal belongings. About six hours later, rural fire responded to a call at the Roundup Store in Mooresboro at 3 a.m. It was the fourth fire there in two years. “We believe it’s arson,” police officer Dan Ledbetter said Monday night. Ledbet ter is a member of the Cleveland County Arson Task Force investigating the blaze. No one was injured in the fire that caused an estimated $2000 damages. Firemen said the cause was an inflammable liquid that “saturated” the whole building. Boiling Springs Rescue reported answer ing two calls for automobile wrecks at Swainsville and North Main Street. No was hurt. Dr. William J. Reynolds is on the faculty of the school of Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He is immediate past president of the Hymn Society of America and was formerly secretary of the Church Music Department of the Southern Baptist Sunday school board. A lecturer, musicians and composer, he was written several books on hymns and was general editor of Baptist Hymnal. Lutz-Austell Funeral Home SHELBY, N.C.
