Church Bell At Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church

The Better Homes Club held their Christmas
meeting in the fellowship hall on Tuesday evening.
Guest speaker was Ms. Frances Kiser who gave a
slide presentation and several poems. A very good
potluck supper was enjoyed amid Christmas
candles and decorations.
Middle adult men’s Sunday school class honored
their wives on Thursday evening with a dinner at
the Western Steer in Shelby. Following the very
delicious meal. Rev. Paul Sorrells spoke to the
group. Then the class presented gifts to their
teachers, Richard Alexander and Lance Houser in
appreciation for their fine way of teaching. Special
guests were Rev. and Mrs. Paul Sorrells and Rev.
and Mrs. Ronald McSwain.
A youth Christmas party was held at the home of
Catherine and Elizabeth Hicks on Friday evening.
Scott Bass, youth director, was here for the
weekend and joined the group in an evening of fun,
food and fellowship.
Members of the late Rev. L. B. Harris family
gathered at the Campfield Memorial fellowship
building for their annual Christmas get together on
Saturday evening. Lots of fellowship was enjoyed
during the evening along with the delicious food.
Several families from this community are in
cluded in the family along with several invited
guests including Mark Broadway of Spruce Pine,
Mike Goode of Shelby, and Rev. and Mrs. Ronald
McSwain and Esther of this community.
Frances Bridges of Macon, Ga, and Mrs.
Kathleen Mauray, sisters of Mrs. Garland Jolley
came home with her and were over-night guests of
the Jolleys on Saturday evening.
All of her children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren were present when Mrs. Cleo
Wallace’s family had their time together at a
Christma party at her home on Sunday. They
enjoyed a delicious meal, lots of conversation and
gifts.
The Clyde Blantons had their family get together
on Sunday. This included their three children,
Ruth, Neal, and Harold Dean with their spouses,
their grandchildren, Tammy and Keith, Roger,
Kelly Blanton, Earlene and Bruce Adams, Nancy
Owens, Kim and Dean Blanton, her sister, Ethel
McBee, and his brother, Ranny Blanton and Mrs.
Blanton. Delicious food was enjoyed by the guests
all afternoon and gifts were exchanged.
David Jolley has arrived home for the holidays
from U.N.C. Greensboro and will be with his
parents until the second week of January. His
parents are P.G. and Sybil Jolley.
The preschool choir and grades 1-6 choir sang
Christmas Music on Sunday evening to a large
audience of mothers, fathers, grandparents and
friends. Mrs. Larry Hicks directed and Catherine
Hicks accompanied on the piano. Soloists in the
Cantata “Once Upon a Night” were: Amy Jolley,
Ann Jolley, Jason Houser, Lori Richards, Chad
Ivester and a trio composed of Laura Houser, Lee
Anne Earls, and Kristi Allen. The instrumental
ensemble played the prelude, “A Christmas
Package.” Rev. McSwain led the invocation and
benediction. A time of fellowship was held in the
fellowship hall. Gifts were distributed by Santa’s
elves to those present.
Mike, Joyce and Jason States are planning to
visit Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brown and Mr. and Mrs.
Don States in Indiana, Pa. This are the parents of
Mike and Joyce.
Congratulations to John and Aletha Hamrick
upon the arrival of a son on Saturday. The baby
was born at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. He has
an older sister Amy and an older brother, Lance.
His grandparents are Frank and Frances Hamrick
of this community.

On Sunday, December 19, a Christmas program
was given followed by fellowship in the basement
of the church.
Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Scruggs honored their son,
Michael, three years old with a birthday supper on
Wednesday at their home. Several were present
and enjoyed the occasion. Among those were
Michael’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mason
Scruggs, and Mr. and Mrs. James Kirby.
Visitors during the weekend of Mr. and Mrs.
Forrest Jones were Mr. and Mrs. General Horton
near Forest City and Mrs. Joyce Clements and
Tony of Spartanburg.
Mr. and Mrs. Mason Scruggs visited Mrs. Daisy
Phillips in Spartanburg on Thursday.
Visitors of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wood were Mr.
and Mrs. K. D. Martin of Belmont, Mrs. Katherine
Ruppe of the Lavonia community, Mr. and Mrs.
Veron Linder of Mayo, and Mr. and Mrs. Kile
Davis.
Mrs. Lovella Crawford spent a few days this
week with Mrs. Flora Crawford.
Mrs. Elsie Harris visited Mrs. Thomas Price on
Sunday.

The adult 3 department Sunday school classes at
the Baptist Church had their Christmas party
together Saturday in the fellowship hall of the
church with a covered dish dinner at 12 noon.
The Etta Curtis Sunday school class at the
Baptist Church had their Christmas party with a
covered dish dinner in the fellowship hall of the
chi un Friday night.
Mrs. Julia McSwain spent the weekend with Mr
and Mrs. Winford Ruppe in Gaffney, S.C.
Cpmmunity sympathy is expressed to Mr. John
Washburn Jr. and his family in the death of his
father Mr. John Washburn Sr.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert P. Greene held their
family Christmas dinner at their home on Sunday.
Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Greene,
Laura and David Greene and Mr. and Mrs. Millard
Bridges and son, Clint.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Buff of Shelby visited Mr.
and Mrs. Glenn Moore over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hamrick attended their
family Christmas party at the State Line Baptist
Church fellowship hall on Saturday night.
Mrs. Etta McSwain is a patient in Crawley
Memorial Hospital.
