Traffic screeched to a halt'
on North Main Street Tues
day, as a blacksnake
slithered leisurely on his
way to town. His journey was
interruped by a group of
young men. Those first on the
scene were trying to assist
the serpent from the road (or
from this cruel world) with a
stick, when another came
forth and, barehanded,
plucked it up. It was last seen
being borne, at arm's length,
on the way to town. This time
as a wiggling trophy.

Only Half
At Church
Don V Look Down
Only about half of church
members (55%) attend church in
an average week, offering
evidence that, for many, par
ticipation in religious services
has become a matter of taste
rather than duty.
Further evidence suggesting
that regular church attendemce is
not regarded as an integral part
of church membership is seen in
the fact that eight in 10 people
(and seven in 10 among church
ed adults) feel that a person can
be a good Christian (or Jew) if he
or she does not attend church (or
synagogue).
Catholics Better Attenders
Than Protestants Or Jews
Six in 10 Catholics (60%) who
say they are church members at
tend church one or more times in
an average week compared to
53% of Protestant church
members and 31% among Jews
who say they are members of a
synagogue.
This analysis is based on in-
person interviews with 10,813
adults, 18 and older, conducted
in seven selected weeks in scien
tifically selected localities across
the nation. This question was

Gardner-Webb College has
again recorded an eill-time high
enrollment of summer school
students. The major con
tributing factor to this increase is
the colleg’s Greater Opportunity
for Adult Learners (GOAL) pro
gram and growth of the graduate
program.
Figures for the first session of
summer school indicate that
GOAL students make up over
half the overran student enroll
ment. 550 students are enrolled
as Gardner-Webb this summer.
288 of those students are in the
GOAL program. Summer school
graduate students grew from 31
in 1982 to 68 this summer.
The overall enrollment total
relects a 3.6% increase over the
previous high recorded in the
summer of 1982, when 531
students were enrolled.
According to Dr. Larry Sale,
assistant academic vice president
who directs the summer school
programs, the demographics of
college students are changing.
“Today’s college students no
longer fall in the traditional 18 to
22 year old category,” he said.
‘The average age of the college
student is going up”. Sale
reported that today the average
age of students in North
Carolina’s colleges and univer
sities is 22.
Gardner-Webb had the adult
student in mind when it
developed the GOAL program
in the fall of 1978, said Sale. The
program offers bachelor’s
degrees to students who have
already earned associated
degrees or the equivalent.
Courses are taught in the even
ing at 13 regional centers and on
the Gardner-Webb campus. The
program began with one satellite
center in Kings Mountain and
now centers are located
throughout North Carolina with
two centers in South Carolina.
In addition to its 13 GOAL
centers, Gardner-Webb has ex
panded its graduate program this
summer to include an off cam
pus center and according to Sale,
beginning in the fall of 1983, the
college will expand its GOAL
program even further to include
16 centers in addition to the
classes offered on fhe G-W cam
pus.
Here's Where They
Grow The Money
These high school students were among 50 attending the
Learn About Business Summer Camp sponsored last week by
the Broyhill Academy at Gardner-Webb. The students toured
Cash Farms, a 600-acre peach farm in S.C. as part of the camp.
