OUGHT TO SMILE. Colonel Kennon, whose picture ap pears on the front cover .of The Cadu- ceus, has been in military service for forty-three years. He is every inch a soldier and has no thought of retire ment during the present war. The colonel, who was ranked as a brigadier-general in the national army while stationed at Camp Grant, Rock ford, III., and who was given the rank of colonel in the regular army when ordered to take charge of Camp Greene, is a West Point graduate. His home is in Providence, R. I. He was first schooled in the military academy at Providence and has literally given his life to the military service of the United States. Colonel Kennon, who wears a ser vice bar of mafiy hues, has seen ser vice in Europe, South America, Hawaii, Cuba, the Philippines and other places. Fifty men from the enlisted person nel of the base hospital were among the five hundred soldiers to be natu ralized before Judge H. P. Long, at the Camp Greene headquarters on Friday morning. The assembly of several hundred aliens took the solemn oath to defend the institutions of the United States and to cast'off all allegiance to their former countries. Judge Long de livered a brief address on the priv ileges and obligations of being an American in these trying hours when the sacred rights of democracy and freedom are being assailed by an arm ed foe. The fifty soldiers from the base hos pital detachment represented the na tionalities of Italian, Polish, Austrian, Irish, Scotch, French, Greek and Rus sian. The Italians had the largest representation. Three nonlcommibsioned officers were in the party to be naturalized: Sergeant First Class Cosgrove, Irish; Sergeant Balmain, Scotch, and Cor poral Prank, h'rench. The medical supply men are de veloping a keen interest in quoits. A tournament would be in order. LIEUT-COLONEL RENN. It has hurried the cataloguers to keep up with the strides of Lieut enant Colonel Renn’s advancement in rank. Just about the time that the of fice force becomes accustomed to writ ing his title properly there is a mes sage from Washington stating that the prefix is out of date. Lieutenant Colonel Renn has been advanced twice since his work at the Camp Greene base hospital started. He was a captain when he took up his duties here last fall. About Feb ruary fifteenth he was notified of his commission as a major. At the end of last week just after The Caduceus had gone to press, a telegram from Wash ington stated that a new commission, that of Lieutenant Colonel, awaiting the hospital commander. Thfi attitude of Lieutenant Colon el Renn has never changed towards those about him through all the stages of his advancement. He always has the same kindly, fair, yet firm bear ings to others of the hospital force. Such has been his mien throu.gh all his professional and military carear and it is such a bearing that wins the glad- acclaim of hearty approval when hon ors come to men like Lieutenant-Col onel Renn.
