BLAMES LICE A recently received letter from Ma jor Seale Harris, the widely known editor of the Southern Medical Jour nal, to a member of the base hospital staff, contains the following of more than passing interest: “The ‘trench fever’ work done by Major Strong and his associates is probably the best piece of work that has been done during the war. It places the louse in the sa,me category with the mosquito and adds another public health problem to the United States, because it has been definitely proved that trench fever infection can be transmitted, and the louse free from, the human host, as long as three months. It is therefore probable there will be many trench fever ‘carriers’ among the American soldiers return ing from France to the United States.” Which reminds us we never did like “cooties,” and since the drawing of this horrible bill of indictment against the pediculosis corporis as not limit ing his actvites on the human body to the development of the condtion of pediculosis vestiment seu vestimen- torum (“lousiness”) we shall have less use for him than ever. Uncle Sam will doubtless use extra precautions in the careful de-lou.sing of all returning Sammies and trans ports, and we trust America will not import the infection of this new dis ease. SOME SHOP. The detachment barber shop now holds two chairs and there arc two loirsoiial artists who clip and shave and massage. Privates Eugene Menga and William Berdinner have combined their labors and the result is a two- chair barber shop in front of Barrlcks 6 that is good to look upon and invit ing to him who needs a shave or hair dressing. THE CADUCEUS. ENJOYED BIG TIME ANATOMICAL PRAYER The entertainment given by the hos pitable folk of St. Martin’s church at the Myers Park Country Club Mon day evening was one of the big social events of the month for the boys of the camp, many men from all organ izations stationed here being present. A number of the boys arrived quite early in the evening to enjoy the add ed pleasure of a cooling, dip amidst the glistening waves of the club’s pool, a treat heartily appreciated by all those who had the spare time to in dulge in it. Dancing was the order of the even ing and despite the intense heat of the earlier day the rhymatic measure of the music seemed to dispel its dis agreeable features and the gliding couples formed a most pleasing pic ture to the interested audience. The orchestra was excellent and all who attended the social heartily agreed that they had a very thorough good time. C. of which hospital Lieutenant-Colonel William Sheep is in command. We especially liked the sentiment of the verse which heads the edito rial page and which follows: A GOOD FELLOW. A fellow who greets you with smile sincere. And talks, and whistles, and breathes good-cheer; Who packs your burdens along with his own When deeming them heavy to carry alone; WJien life on earth is a long, sweet song. And does all he can to boost it along Who scatteres his joys and pockets his woes. And don’t give a whoop if the whole world knows; Is a loyal fellow—I’ll glvje you a tip— Of the Ancient Order of Good Fellow ship. land of Mecklenburg county, located near Charlotte, and holding modern buildings.
