FOR Thirty-four of the thirty-seven stud ents who compose the first unit of the Army School of Nursing, have arrived and are gradually being initiated into the mysteries of the life of a proba tioner in nursing the sick. All of these young ladies represent a superior grade of intelligence and culture, hav ing made their application through the Dean of the Army School of Nursing, Office of the Surgeon General, Wash ington, and received their appoint ments through her. They must pre sent credentials as having completed high school, or an excellent equiva- lettit. As a fact, more than fifty per cent of them are college or normal school graduates. And, what is also an excellent, though unrequired creden tial, many of them have made practi cal use of their educational advantages by way of teaching, or other vocation al employment. They come to us from a number of different states, only two being from North Carolina in this group. It is an honor to Camp Greene to have been chosen as one of the camps whose Base Hospital • is to afford the greater part of the course of training for th new schools of nursing, the. institution of which has been called forth by the need of nurses for the war service. The young women repre sent a response to a call sent forth for enlistment in a work of the high est order of patriotism, demanding social and educational qualifications corresponding. Their training and pro fessional advantages while with us must fie of the best, to produce the highest type of nurses for ohr coun try’s need. Bacteriology is being taught by Miss Chapin, laboratory assistant. Lectures, are being given in the recon struction ward E-3. During the four months preliminary course the following subjects will make up the cirriculum. .A.natomy and Physiology, Applied While we are trying to begin the teaching work and keep going, our equipment is slow in arriving; books, laboratory furnishings, etc., are or dered through headquarters at Wash ington, but not yet here. As no special provision has been made by the War Department to supply the needs of class rooms in hospitals, we are short of many furnishings which would add greatly to our comfort and conven ience. Bookcases, writing tables, libra ry furnishings of almost any kind, are needed. We hope as our school pro gresses to have all the equipment of use in the best civil hospitals, and while we are a crude exterior, archi tecturally, we may be cheerful and homelike within. BAND WILL PLAY Oasis Temple Band of Charlotte, will give an open-air concert at the Soldiers’ club, Sunday afternoon, Sep tember at 4 o’clock. Mrs. Bertha Orndorf, of Charlotte, soprano, will be the soloist. Following the concert the usual informal social hour will be observed when soldiers will be giv en opportunity to become acquainted with civilians. Every enlisted man of Camp Greene is cordially invited. Fourth Liberty Loan! iiiiiiiiii LIFT- DON’T LEAN Buy Liberty Bonds! iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Space Donated by ARMSTRONG MILLS, Gastonia
