f ■ * I MOONSHINE LETTER Miss lone A. Lott, Sunshine, Ave,, Opportunity, Pa. Lovey: I am SICK. I am in the hos- pittal with the Spanish Influences, which is all the rage now. I was afeard that I wuz gonna hav it, cause I set next to a Spaniard in the Mess Haul, and et some of Mess Sergeant I.iaske’s Spanish Stew. They fetched me frum camp in a Ambleance, but the fool what was drivin it didn’t am ble any, but driv lak he was goin to a fire. I wuzn’t sick befour I left camp, but I shore was sick when I got to the hospittal. He shook me till I thot that my floatin ribs wud be drowned, and I swallowed all my faulse teeth. They outa haul sick men in them mil- itery carriages that I’ve heard so much talk of, but it seams that they is fur officers only. After I got hear at the hospittal, they put me in Ward A-1. All the best men air put in Class A-1, which includes me. I had to put on a suit of pajimmies. and I am so bashful thet I blushes ever time a Red X nurse comes neer me, and she thinks thet I hav a fever. The nurses all ware handkerchiefs tied acrost there faces to hid them, but I can sea them blush ing behind the camelflage, and hit aint fare to weuns nor the nurses neither. They remind me of Turkish wimmen sneaken around so grasefull, with their faces hid and their eyes THE CADUCEUS gleamin like cats’ eyes in the dark. Honey, they giv your hero a big dose of salts and you know how that is, I mean you know how sick it makes a feller. If I stay hear long I KNOW I’ll be sick. They feed us on Pa tients’ Mess, and it is SUM mess. It wud destroy anybodies patience. Be tween meals they give us glass tooth picks, and tell us to stick em under our tongues. There aint no pint on em and I bit mine off to a pint so I could pretend like I wuz pickin my teeth, altho I hadn’t et nothin. The nurse got mad and called me a fool. I told her that she didn’t look lak any “Intelligents Bure?iu,” and to keep her old tooth picks. I slipped my pocket nife in hear with me, and she don’t know that I can pick my teeth in spite of her. They put a rubber bag full of hot water on my stumick, when what I realy needed in it wuz a .square.meal and a drinh uv corn lik- ker—I mean in my stumick. I didn’t want the durn thing on me, so I hid it under me, and I am afeard that I kant set down on nuthin cept a pil low, alter I gits outa hear. The nurse sed she wuz goin to take my temper- ture so I told her that I guest they took it at the Receavin Ward, cause they took my clothes and all my mon ey, but I dont remember them ever is suing me a temperature when I jined the army. The doctor come around and con nected a telephone to my chest and listened to my insides, but I don’t think that he heerd any thing cause Springdale Dairy Special Milk For Babies All milk delivered to the wholesale and retail trade is clarified and perfectly pas teurized.
