MUCH IMPROVED.
Captain Hamner is out on the
streets again after an operation and
we are all very glad to see him about.
Friend Ross:—Well, dammit, they
went and ended the war on me. It’s
Just a month since I came here, i
guess now it’s simply a case of “lli
again, out again, Finnegan.”
You remember I promised to tell
you about gas drill. Well, take it
from me, gas attacks ended forever
when the Hun signed the armistice!
And yet on the next day they got us
all into line and the old one-two-three
practice started again. The work was
like a post-mortem except that a post
mortem is useful. But the discipline
and drill count and I, for one, have
attained a lot of respect for a real line
and a company of trained men.
It won’t be long now before we all
hear the ‘"bout, face’’ and then it will
be “as you were” till the next war.
Our chief amusement down here
outside of swapping yarns is “Black
Jack”—we used to call it “stud”; just
for the fun of being in it, I took a
hand th^ other night and on the first
deal got kings back to back. Wasn’t
that like they are in Europe today? 1
played the situation for all it was
worth, and the kings stood up.
Wasn't that different from kings in
Europe today?
I suppose my chance to get across
is off since I’m not especially fit for
any kind of plastic or reconstruction
work. Most of us anticipate a lot of
physical examinations and then
“home, sweet home.” In the mean
time, since the war is over a lot of
the boys have sent for their wives to
cohie down—going to give them a
war end outing. The harem is mdstlj
located in the Hotel Stratton. Some
amusing incidents occur on account
of the differences in rank between the
lady lieutenantesses, capitainesses
and on up. But ain’t that just like the
women? Here in camp we’re all
equal—just scholars.
Ross, they have two mottoes down
here and I’m going to print them out
for you and when I get home I’m go
ing to have them fixed up to hang
ever my desk. If we all got nothing
else out of this these two would make
it worth while.
Keep your eyes peeled;
Keep your lips sealed.
Can you beat that for a doctor?
Do it well! do it now; do it cheer
fully!
Ever since I got here I’ve been hust
ling right along those lines and it’s
/ fumored I may get an appointment
that carries a promotion with it.
Wouldn’t that be great? I’ll say so!

CAPTAIN RETURNS.
Capt: Gaston Day has reported back
from a fifteen day’s leave of absence
during which period he visited New
York.
BACK AGAIN.
Capt. John Brown has returned from
his home in Paris, Ky., where he was
called by serious illness, to the bed
side of his wife and father-in-law.
Capt. Leonard Hiart hag found that
hig services in the laboratory are
still needed but we fear that the cap
tain is ill for his welcome smile has
turned to a perpetual frown. But
cheer up Captain you still have
friends.
Lieut. Stauffer has returned from a
five days leave, the first in six years,
to resume his duties as hospital prop
erty officer.
HAD FINE TIME.
Lieut. M. R. Levine is with us
again after an absence of ten days
which he spent in New York City and
he reports that he had a swell time
while there.
HAS SHORT LEAVE.
Lieut. L. O. Gibson is back on the
job after a short leave which he spent
at his home in Statesville, N. C.
LOST.

night, coming from town in taxi.

ALL CONSTRUCTION WORK IS
STOPPED.
Construction work at Camp Greene
has been suspended by Major Clar
ence H. reene, construction quarter
master, in compliance with orders re
ceived several days ago from the war
department. Two contractors of
Charlotte were engaged on big jobs
there, Porter & Boyd being engaged
in laying water and sewer mains and
other work, and J. A. Jones was in
charge of various building projects.
