MUSIC WAS THE BEST YET
The daace given at the Red Cross
building by the enlisted men ol the
base hospital, on Wednesday evening,
■was a real delight. The music from
the five piece orchestra was the best
that the hospital dances have yet af
forded.
There was a good attendance of
Charlotte young ladies as well as hos
pital nurses and probationers.
GUESTS AT RED CROSS HOUSE.
While the infleunza held the neigh
borhood in which Lieut-Colonel George
A. Renn and family reside in Charlotte
in it's grip Mrs. Renn and son, George,
Jr., moved to the Red Cross building
at the base hospital. The family of the
commanding officer made the Red
Cross building their home for the
greater part of last week.
George Jr., has been a prime favor
ite of those who visited the Red
Cross building and Mrs. Renn has
endeared herself to the hospital per
sonnel by her kindly attentions to the
nurses and enlisted men during- her
stay here.
HAS VOCALABERY
At a recent called meeting of the
city and camn welfare workers at the
office of Captain Bernard Chapin,
army morale officer, it was agreed
that the best service that cojild be
rendered to the men who are coming
to Camp Greene for demobilization
and under the usual period of quaran
tine restricted to the camp, would be
to provide good reading matter. The
War-Camp Community Service, with
the co-operation of the camp and city
librarians, citizens and the army Y.
M. C. A. Secretaries, has been sup
plying this need for several weeks.
Flans were also discussed at the
special meeting of workers called by
Captain Chapin for the speeding up
of numerous and wholesome entertain
ments in order to assist in maintain
ing the high morale of the men until
they can be returned to civillian life.
Present at the meeting were represen
tatives of the War-Camp Community
Service, the Jewish Welfare, Y. W.
C A. Knights of Columbus, Y. W. C.
A. secretaries, army song leader,
dramatic coach, librarian and athletic
director.
COOK MATTIES USES EXPRES
SIONS ALL HER OWN
A tew of the darkles of the old time
regime remain in their delightfully
untutored state. The Nurses home
possesses one of these rare specimens
in the person of “Mattie” a dishwasher
extraordinary. Her vocabulary is ex
tensive, colorful and original. A com
bination of words producting a reality
and meaning which the original and
correct word does not express even
so well. A few, only, ol her expres
sions, I quote below:
Two of the young colored maids
were going down town and Mattie
had constituted herself the uninvited
chaperon. They did not seem to want
her very much but she was saying to
Miss Edwards “I just tells them Ise
my own opposition” (option ?)
To the Orderly bringing the dishes
from the Infirmary to her to wash she
asks: Bid you bring dem dishes from
de Reformatory (Infirmary)
N To Miss Edwards: Who was driving
in the kitchen: “Youse de greatest
person for fixing up little nobicles.
(novelties)
She had been indulging In some con
versation directed toward one of the
boys in the kitchen one day and
apologized somewhat by saying: “Now
Honey chile don’ you get vexlnated
at ole Mattie’s foolishness’’ (Vexi-
nated or vexed)
GETTING SERVICE.
The Prohs are getting a touch of
real service in the opening weeks of
their stay at the base hospital. There
is a shortage of help for dining room
service at the nurse’s home and the
new comers are being given a chance
to show their versalities by being al
lowed to wait on table and aid in kitch
en work.
