Tuesday, February 16, 1954 THE POINTER Page Thi’ee Bison To Play Salisbury Here High Point High will play host to the Yellow Jackets of Salisbury in the school gym at 8 o’clock to night. The Bison will be looking for their second win against the Salis bury quintet of the 1953-54 sea son, having already defeated the “Jackets” earlier in the year 55-44. High Point should win this game by about 10 points. Last Thursday the Bison drop ped a 47-60 game to the Black De mons of R. J. Reynolds, playing on the large court at Winston-Salem. Although High Point’s star center, Jimmy Burgess, racked up a high score of 21 points, the Bison were unable to pull through. The High Pointers led this battle through the first three quarters but dropped it in the last, scoring only 7 points to Reynold’s 16. Friday will end the basketball season for the Bison as they vie with Greensboro in the Gate City. This game appears to be a toss-up. The Whirlies defeated the Bison in their first clash by only three points, 38-41. High Point now has a 7 win—8 loss record for the season with a 4-7 conference record. Although the Bison got off to a good start this year, winning its first four games, they did not fare so well in regular conference competition. David Fagg The Spanish have a word for it —atleta, and High Point High School has one for it, too—David Fagg. David is an all-around athlete. He was co-captain of the football team this year while starring at end position. This is David’s sec ond year of wrestling. He grapples in the 175-pound class. David is also planning to play his second year of baseball this spring. In the tenth grade David even played junior varsity basketball and has all along played intramural bas ketball. Last year he was a “three letter’’ man and hopes to be the same this year. In school activities other than sports, David is in the National Honor Society, Who’s Who, and is Senior director of the Key Club, secretary and treasurer of the Monogram Club, and treasurer of the Hi-Y. David states that he chose wrest ling over basketball because wrest ling develops one’s body and helps one to become better balanced and also rougher in football. David has been working in the cafeteria for two years and is now a cashier there. Anyone who knows David Fagg will tell you that his favorite sub jects are sports and “Barbara.” Lizzie Gooch Shop EXCLUSIVE READY-TO-WEAR AND MILLINERY Arcade Building NORTH STATE TELEPHONE CO. 104 College Street Martha Ellingt on is Winner Of Awards Offered By GAA Martha Ellington, a senior at H. P. H. S. is one of the school’s most versatile athletes. She has been a four-year member of the local Girls’ Athletic Association. In these four years, she has made a name for herself in almost every sport offered by the association. This is proved by the fact that she was a candidate for ‘Most Athle tic” in the Senior Class. The climax of her high school athletic career came in her Junior year when she received the North Carolina State pin, which is the highest honor that can be awarded to a Girls’ Athletic Association member. This year, Martha was an out standing figure on the speedball team, as she has been in two pre vious years. Although she also participated in softball and volleyball, her main sport is basketball. So far this year Martha is the high scorer for the girls’ basketball team, which has a 4-3 won-lost record. In the spring of 1952, Martha broke the state broad jump record, which has not been equaled. In the summer you can usually find Martha out at the City Lake practicing her swimming and div ing. Martha is a clerk in the student store and a member of several or ganizations, including the F. T. A. and the Service Club. HPHS Tank Team To Compete In Meet At Carolina Saturday High Point High’s swimmers will participate on Saturday in the Southern Interscholastic Swim ming Meet to be held at Chapel Hill. In this meet the Bison will swim against teams from all over the South. Some probable entries in the high school division are Greensboro; Raleigh; Wilmington; Fayetteville; Louisville, Kentucky; Athens, Georgia; Sumter, South Carolina; and Granby High of Richmond, Virginia. ’There is also a prep school division in which Stanton, Augusta, Sewanee, Geor gia, and Castle Heights military academies and Asheville School for Boys will Participate. Swimming Coach, Bob Ousley, says that he believes the high school honors will be taken by either Athens or Granby. High Point should be in line for a third place in this meet, however. Two weeks ago the Bison mer men plastered Wilmington by a score of 65-20 as they swam the New Hanover High rivals in Chapel Hill. Stand-outs in this meet were Jimmy Younts, who swam the 100-yard backstroke in one minute 10.5 seconds; and Chester Haworth, who easily won the 160-yard individual medley in one minute 59.2 seconds.
