In spring a young man’s fancy
turns to . . . spring sports.
And that is just what has hap
pened in our school. Last week
the track, baseball, tennis and golf
teams began their practice ses
sions under the bright blue sky.
The bright sunshine and mild
weather must have affected the
racket boys, as over 20 tennis
players reported to Coach Patten
to begin practice.
The first team to start their
games will be the baseball squad.
They will travel to Thomasville
Friday to start the baseball sea-

son. Returning from last year’s
squad will be such capable players
as George Hayworth, John
Sherrill, Harold Moose, Marvin
Richards, Kendall Farlow, Ronnie
Huber, Bruce Overby and David
Kemp.
The Bison baseballers will
depend on David Kemp, Kendall
Farlow and Charlie Craver (the
only southpaw,) to handle the
pitching duties for the team this
season. All three of the boys' have
looked good in practice and should
do a fine job on the mound.

Bison Cagers Recall
High Spots Of '59;
Finish Season 14-6
By Jimmy Curlee
The High Point Black Bison
finished the ’59 cage season with
a record of 14 wins and 6 losses.
However, with a conference record
of 4 wins and 4 losses, the team
was not able to play in the State
AAA Tournament.
Although the team was short in
height, they made up for this
throughout the season by showing
a desire to win and by playing their
hearts out in each game. The
Bison out-rebounded their taller
opponents all year and were
considered one of the top defensive
ball teams in the state.
Although High Point did not
play in the_ tournament, the team
did play six of the tournament
teams during the regular season.
The Bison defeated five out of
"the six teams' they played, which
included the two top' teams in the
Western and Eastern conferences:
Asheville, Gastonia, Raleigh and
Wilmington (this was Wilming
ton’s only loss of the season^
Many thrills went long with the
14-6 record. Who could ever for
get the night Tommy Burton scor
ed 30 points to lead the Bison to
victory over the Catawba Fresh
men, _ or the night Richard
Carmichael scored the winning
points against iSalisbury with six
seconds' remaining in the game?
The students will always re
member the night Wilmington’s
vining streak was broken and the
game in which the Bison came from
behind to defeat Raleigh by one
point.
Although our Bison failed to
play in the tournament, we will
always remember the team of
’58-’59 as one of the greatest and
hardest working teams that the
school has ever had.
To Coach Simeon and all of the
members of the team, thanks
for a job well done.
Tom Burton Makes
AII-ConferenceTeam
By Jimmy Curlee
Tommy Burton, leading scorer
for the Bison basketball team,
has been chosen for the Central
AAA All-Conference Team.
Richard Carmichael was named
to the second team, while Charlie
McPherson was' given honorable
mention.
Serving as co-captain of this
year’s team. Tommy has played
outstanding ball all season. He
has led the Bison scoring with an
18-point average for 20 games.
Tommy not only was a great
scorer but helped the team with
his rebounding.
Basketball is not the only thing
in which Tommy excels; he is the
president of the Spanish Club, has
recently been inducted into the
National Honor Society and holds
an office in the Order of Demolay.
He was elected Friendliest in the
Senior Class and his name appear
ed in Who’s Who,
Tommy is not sure where he
will attend college, but he would
like to continue playing basket
ball while he receives an educa
tion.
Richard Carmichael and Charlie
McPherson have also been a great
help to the Bison with their out
standing playing. Richard has been
the leading rebounder for the
cagers and has been one of the
high scorers, while Charlie has
kept the team in many a game
with his play-making.
The 10 boys named to the first
and second team and those given
honorable mention were chosen by
the five coaches of the Central
AAA Conference for outstanding
playing throughout the season.
