No one can make a goDcl man who allows himself to drink, ^tay out late or overeat. Un less you can control your body, your appetite and your passions you’ll never win the battle of life. ,5. Daily grind. Learn the lesson of daily grind, work, gettmg ready for the game. The lazy men all drop out. There are those who play football by waiving flags, tooting horns, and shouting; but the • .star player in the game has spent hours and hours of hard work and ,-weat in preparation. If you cannot stand the da-ly grind of Algebra, Engh'sh and other s-ubjects, hard to maste;-, you’ll never -win the game. Your school days are days of preparation for the big game of life. The daily grind makes the .scholar as well as the successful bu iness man. 6. Bleachers. When all the thou sands are moving s flags, tooting horns, yelling and enthusiasm is high, you feel that you are bound to win. Cultivate enthusiasm for everything you undertake—fall in love with your job—that’s the way to win success. You’ll carry your ball to the long fought goal line. Paramunt Theatre GOLDSBORO, N. C. Washing-ton, Nov. 25.—Pay up on December' 15, America has advised her foreign debtors, and thus cre ate a more favorable atmosphere for the reconsideration of the whole war debt irroblem by a commission which Pre ident Hoover will • ask Congress to authorize. This was the gist of notes for warded by Secretary Stlmson in re sponse to the requests of France. Great Britain and Belgium, for an [ i] 3xtension of the present moratori- am and a re-examination of the' iebt situation. “As to the suspension of the in stallment of the British debt due December 15, which is one of the ibjectives of your note, no author ity lies within the executive to .grant such an extension and no facts have been placed in our pos se sion w''hich could be presented to Congress for favorable considera tion,” said the note presented to Ambassador Lindsay of Great Bri tain. Similar passages were contain ed in the notes to France and Bel gium. The communication forward ed to London continued: “Such importance is attached by our government and people to main tenance of the original agreement in force by the payment on De cember 15 as to far outweigli any reason now apparent for its >us- pension, and by such payments the prospects of a satisfactory ap proach to the whole question, in my opinion, would be greatly increas ed.” • -"% Your druggist or chain store Z. Dr, Henry Louis Smith, Pre.sident Emeritu- of Washington & Lee University, made a delightful ad- dres.s before the Selma High School and a number of visitors. Dr. Smith, wiio began his teaching career in Selma, is always received enthusi astically on hi.s return visits. His old pupils, as well a- the citizenry of Selma, take great pride in hav ing- a partial claim on this distin guished gentleman. A short devotional period was held; Rev. W. J. Crain read a scrip ture lesson and offered prayer, Supt. Tuttle introduced one of Dr. Smith’s former pupils, Dr. Geo. D. "Vick, who, in turn introduced the speaker. Dr. Smith compared the battle of life to a game of football in terms easily understood and thoroughly . appreciated by his audience. His re- J marks were grouped under six re- I spective heads: 1. Game. In the game you’ve got to -overcome resistance and the fel low who likes the rocking chair and hates perspiration is a failure on th'e gridiron oflife. You mu.st ■work and fight for everything- you waiit—th(--re is no success for the lazy. . The glory .of the game is in ov:-reoming difficultie.s. 2. Coacli.
