Bill Introduced To Pay Explosion Claims • following bill was introduced in the Senate of the Unitdd States by 1942 J- W. Bailey on October 13, The bill was read twice and referr cd to the Committee on Claims. A BILL For the relief of certain claimants against the United States who suffered personal injuries, property damage, or other loss as a result of the explosion of a munitions truck between Smithfield and Sel ma, North Carolina, on March 7 1942. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, _ That the Secretary of the Treasury js authorized and directed to pay, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to the claim ants hereinafter named, the sums hereinafter specified, in full-satisfac tion of their respective claims against the United States for compensation for property losses or damages sus tained, by them as the result of an explosion which oecurred when a truck in which munitions were being transported for use by the United States Army collided with a privately owned passenger automobile at the intersection of United States High ways Numbered 301 and 70, between Selma and Smithfield, on March 7, 1942. The optimistic G. O. P. Note was sounded by members of the National Committee’s executive group, and was made even more specific by one mem ber, Frank E. Gannett, who said “the voters in November will elect a Republican House.” Gannett, New York newspaper publisher and assistant chairman of the National Committee, told a meet ing of House and Senate Republicans that the public is “losing patience” and is “disgusted with the bungling, confusion and inefficiency” in the ad ministration’s war efforts. Church entertained the Philathea class and the Micro school faculty and a few invited guests October 23rd, at a barbecue supper in the school library. Dr. M. Hinnant acted as master of ceremonies. He introduced the guests and recognized the members of the faculty. Supt. H. B. Marrow, ,the guest, speaker, gave a few highlights on the “Constitutional Amendment” and the future school .transportation system, and how parens and teachers may help in keeping the buses running during the war emergency.
