By MRS. H. B. BYNUM
More than two hundred years ago, in
1740, William Heritage came to Kinston
from New Bern, to what was then the
wilderness of our great State. In 1750,
Richard Caswell of Maryland settled here
and became the first governor of North
Carolina under the Constitution. Others
having joined these pioneers, the estab

Royal Governor Arthur Dobbs in 1762,
and it was named Kingston which later
dropping the troublesome “g” became
Kinston, and in 1849 became incorporated

Situated on the Neuse River, Kinston

spot on the North Carolina Plain. It is
served by nine paved highways, two rail

Located on U. S. Highways 70 and 258
Kinston has developed into a thriving
town with a 99 per cent American popu

The climate is usually favorable and

general provisions sent to the aged and
shut in persons of our town, a com
munity tree, and a donation of $25 for the
D. O. department of the Wilson High
School. The consciousness of having add
ed some pleasure to the needy, heighten
ed the holiday joy of our members in
their own merry Yuletide party.
The Mercy Hospital Auxiliary raised
$381.61 in the Community Chest drive and
donated twenty-five dollars to the high
school. Baskets of fruit made attractive
gifts to all patients in the Hospital.
The Book and Garden Club is proud of
its Year Book. Less than a year old, the
club jrojects a most stimulating and help
