1. In what languages was the
Bible lirst written?
Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
2. Where are the original copies
of the Biole?
The original manuscripts of the
Hebrew Old Testament and of the
Greek Gospels and Epistles, etc.,
have all been worn out and dis
carded long ago. Copies were made
by hand, used, recopied and dis
carded over and over again.
But in 1947 the entire Book of Isa
iah, with the exception of two very
small breaks, was discovered in a
cave northwest of the Dead Sea.
The parchment had been hidden in
an earthenware jar, wrapped in
yards of cloth and covered with
pitch. It is considered, by experts,
to have been written during the
first century B.C., fuUy 1,000 years
before the oldest previously known
Hebrew manuscript of a book of
the Bible. The evidence points to
the fact that this manuscript of
Isaiah was undoubtedly in use
while Christ was living. Some 70
manuscripts, possibly older, have
since been discovered.
The oldest Greek manuscripts of
larger parts of the Bible are the
Codex Sinaiticus, now in the Brit
ish Museum, and the Codex Vati-
canus, now in the Vatican. These
were probably written in the fourth
century and contain the Greek text
of nearly the whole Bible. Older
papyrus fragments exist in Greek.
3. How did the Bible get into
Enghsh?
By the work of Wycliffe, Tyndale,
Coverdale, and others, translating
it from the original languages into
English.
Wycliffe’s Bible, 1383, the first
English Bible, was written by
hand.
Tyndale’s New Testament, 1525,
was the first printed English New
Testament.
Coverdale’s Bible, 1535, was the
first printed English Bible.
The King James appeared in
1611. It was revised in England in
1885 and in the United States in
1901. A further revision of the New
Testament appeared in the United
States in 1946, followed by the Old
Testament in 1952. This is known
as the Revised Standard Version.
4. What was the date of the first
printed Bible? Who did it and
where?
Between 1450-56 at Mainz, Ger
many. Johann Gutenberg was the
printer. The Bible was in Latin,
being printed from a contemporary
manuscript of the Vulgate. There
are between forty and fifty copies
of this Bible known to be in ex
istence. One copy is owned by the
Congressional Library, Washing
ton, D. C. This is said to be one of
the three perfect copies and one of
several printed on vellum. The cost
of the Congressional Library copy
was nearly $400,000.
