President's
Message
Kind Ladies of the N. C. Fed
eration:
Words fail me in an attempt to
express appreciation to you for
your support during the club year.
Truly we have been saddened by
the loss of those near and dear
to us in our club work but our
losses caused many of you to re
double your efforts at making our
motto, “Lifting as we climb” more
meaningful.
Through our united effort we
h.ave supported the Frederick
Douglass Memorial Fund and as a
result our Federation ranked fifth
according to last reports. Since
contributions will be accepted until
the meeting of the National As
sociation of Colored Women’s Clubs
which will be held July 28 through
August 3 in Washington, D. C. our
Federa t i o n has possibilities of
reaching a higher rank if you will
use your influence to get addi
tional funds from other interested
people.
By the way I am asking that
you kindly make a contribution to
our annual meeting of $5.00 from
each club toward the support of
the program of the National. In
dividual membership in the organ
ization is $2.00 which means that
$5.00 from your club will pay two
memberships, say that of your
president and secretary, then the
extra $1.00 will be used toward a
delegate’s expense and our repre
senting in the “Parade of States,”
a financial effort held at the
meetings of the National. May I
suggest too that many of you will
plan your vacations in Washington,
D. C., so that you might attend
the National, see the Headquarters
Building so that you will feel your
selves a part of the program. Re
member that our former president,
the late Mrs. Rose D. Aggrey
stressed greater participation in
the National and Southeastern and
we certainly don’t want to let her
wishes go without notice.
Again I am grateful to you for
deciding at our meeting last year
to sponsor the Birthday Remem
brance Program for our boys and
girls in correctional institutions.
Miss Wilhemina Laws of Greens
boro has accepted chairmanship
of the project. The birthday lists
will be sent to her from the office
of Mr. Blaine Madison, Commis
sioner of Corrections, and she will

MRS. MAMIE B. REESE
President, Southeastern Region
Mamie Bynes Reese is a native
of Macon, Georgia where she re
ceived her elementary and high
school education. She earned the
Bachelor of Science degree from
Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga.,
and was awarded the Master
of Science degree from Drake
University, Des Moines, Iowa.
Further study has been done at
Ohio State University, University
of Southern California and Sim
mons College in Boston, Mass.
Her experience includes teacher
at Center High School in Waycross,
Ga.; teacher at the Des Moines
Technical High School; Extension
worker in Baker and Burke Coun
ties, Georgia and presently Asst.
Prof, of Education at Albany State
College, a position she has held
for the past 14 years.
Her affiliations include member
ship into the Georgia Teachers and
Educational Association; Utilis
Matronae Federated Club; Semper
Fidelis Federated Club; Nine
O’clock Club; Georgia Federation
of Colored Women’s Clubs of
which she is past president; Presi
dent of Southeastern Federation
of Colored Women’s Clubs; mem
ber of Auxiliary to the Georgia
and Southeastern Medical Socie
ties; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
and Hines Memorial C.M.E.
Church.
The Federated Clubs of Durham
will be host to the N. C. Federa
tion of Negro Women’s Clubs on
May 4 and 5, 1962 in the St.
Joseph’s Church on Fayetteville
Street.
The theme: “New Frontiers —
Lifting as we Climb.” The state
chairman for programs, Mrs. Nor
ma Darden working with Mrs.
Plassie Harris, host chairman is
announcing the followiing arrange
ments :
1. Special guest will be Mrs. Ma
mie B. Reese of Albany, Ga., who
is president of the Southeastern
Region of NACWC.
2. The Convention opens with a
brief Executive Board Meeting in
the late afternoon of May 4, 1962.
3. Friday Evening May 4, 1962 a
Public Program will be held. High
lights of the program will be the
address of Mrs. Reese and spe
cial music. Following will be a
gala reception.
4. Saturday morning. May 5, 1962
— First Business Session.
5. Because of efforts to shorten
this Convention, the clubs will re
port during the Saturday luncheon
hour. Delegates are asked to pre
pare brief, concise reports as time
will be limited.
6. The Youth Federation will
present their Annual Oratorical
Contest to the women on Saturday
at 1:00 P.M. They will hold their
business session on Saturday as
usual. Mrs. Lucille Albright, re
cently appointed by the board to
direct the N. C. Youth Federation
will be in charge.
7. The Convention will complete
its program early Saturday after
noon.
8. For reservations write: Mrs.
R. P. Randalph, 305 Peke Street,
Durham. Board and lodging will
be about eight dollars.
