SOUTHEASTERN DISTRICT FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS The Southeastern District Federation of Women’s Clubs held their Eleventh Annual Convention on April 15, 1967, Fayetteville, North Caolina. The District Clubs are mov ing forward to success with many activities. The Rose D. Aggrey Memorial Scholarship Rally closed September 1, 1967, Washington Drive Junior H i|g h School, Fayetteville, North Carolina, with a Queen Contest. Winning Queen Miss Easter West, a member of the Senior Federation Club, Fay etteville, North Carolina. Miss West was crowned by Mr. Henry W. Parker, Superinten dent, Morrison Training School, Hoffman. Second Place winner, Mrs. Nellie Jones. Third Place winner, Mrs. Martha Melvin of the Senior Club. Mrs. S. T. Henley is the President. The District Meeting was held September 9th, John Hall Presbyterian Church, Carthage, North Carolina. Moore County Federation, Mrs. L. E. Phillips, Fh-esident. Mt. Zion Club, ako Hostess. Our Distinct President has been highly honored this year, 1967, by Mayor Monroe E. Evans of Fayetteville by pre senting her the Seal of the City of Fayetteville, North Carolina, for her loyal and outstanding service to churches, schools, communities, and civic clubs. She was also chosen Ideal Mother of Cumberland County by the Jack and Jill Club of America of Fayetteville. Holds Annual Session Franklin Center at Bricks, N. C. was the setting for the 58th Annual Session of the North Carolina Federation of Negro Women’s Clubs held June 8-9- 10th imder the newly elected president, Mrs. Fannie T. New- some. Host clubs for the con vention were: The Flower & Art Club and the Book Club from Rich Square, N. C. — the Jolly Worker’s Club of Wood land, the Professional and Busi ness Women’s Club of Weldon, and the Women’s Kindergarten Club of Ahoskie, N. C. The session was largely at tended in both the adult and youth departments. Some of the highlights of the meeting were: The Thursday night welcome program with guest speaker, Mrs. Mattie K. Daniels, State President of New York City; and music by the host choir. There was a workshop on the convention theme: “The Obli gation of Club Women To Guide Youth In Building A Better World’’. A Bus Tour of Historic Halifax, N. C., an Oratorical Contest; Talent and Fashion Show by the Youth; Arts and Craft Exhibits and a Scrap Book Contest. The Busi ness session was very informa tive and profitable. Viola T. Bishop, Reporter Girls from seven of the eight states (Ala., Fla., Ga., Miss., N. C., S. C., and Va.) attende^d the 11 o’clock service at the St. Joseph A. M. E. Church, Sun day, July 30, 1967. Six o’clock in the evening the girls attended the Mass meeting with the adult body. Dr. Ross Brown Butler, retired professor of North Carolina College was the keynote speak er. Monday, July 31, 1967 at 7:30 A. M. the Press Breakfast was attended by June Williams, N. C. President of Girl’s Clubs; Jacqueline Waddell, President, Duchess of Utopia, Durham; Brenda Jenkins of Durham; Florine Jones, Greenwood, Miss.; Edwina Riley, Ft. Pierce, Fla; Jacqueline Montgomery, Prichard, Ala.; Yvonne Brick- house, Chesapeake, Va.; and Anna Reubin, Sumter, S. C. The Press Breakfast was fol lowed by Devotion with the parent body in the University ballroom at 9 a. m. The girls retired to the Wedgeiwod room at 9:30 a. m. for their first general business. Presiding was June Williams, acting in absence of the SEA Giirls Pres. Acting as secre taries were Edwina Riley, Fla. and Florine Jones, Miss. Mrs. Ida B. Thompson. Southeastern Youth Advisor called the meet ing to order and gave the girls a summary of their obligations to the association. The results of Mrs. Thompson’s summary was followed through by the girls with the election of a nominating committee, recom mendations and resolutions were made. Second CJeneral Session — 2 p. m. Wedgewood Room: A Workshop Theme: “Youth Role in Local, National and World .Mfairs.” Much useful informa tion was given, the workshop was one of the best we have ever had. It proved very bene ficial to all concerned. Monday evening the girls at tended the Convention Ban quet m the University Ball room. Speaker of the evening was Mrs. Algernon Bolen, Pres ident of S. E. A. of Women and Girls Clubs, Ft. Pierce, Fla. Awards were made to club women for outstanding and de voted service. After which the march of states. Third General Session 9 a. m., August 1, 1967. Presiding — Edwina Riley of Fllorida. Election of officers was held and unfinished business was completed. Preparation for the tour and youth night was made. Bus Tour — Durham and Ra leigh 2 p. m., was enjoyed by the girls and ladies of the states. 8 p. m. Youth Night Pro gram was held in the Univer sity Ballroom. Presiding was Estelle Bailey of Durham, N. C. and Barbara Casterlow, Rich Square, N. C. The Whitted Junior High School’s Modern Dance Group were guest per- formers-Durham, N. C. TTie youth presented an Oratorical, Fashion and Talent Contest. The Oratorical topics were: “Youth Role in Meeting the Challenge of Change in Making of a Better World” or “Involv ing Youth in the Challer^e of Social Change for A Brighter Tomorrow.” The winners were: Oratorical Contest: First Place, Rubin Mc- MUlan, Fayetteville, N. C.; sec ond place, Gail Durham, Greenville, N. C.; third place, Florine Jones, Greenwood, Miss. The winners were: Fashion Contest: First Place, Edwina Riley, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; second place, Florine Jones, Greeny- wood Jones, Greenwood, Miss.; third place, Brenda Jenkins, Durban^ N. C. The judges for the Talent Contest were: Mrs. Dorothy C. Judkins, Music, Durham City Schools; Mrs. Martha B. Thorpe, Music and Chorus, City Schools; and Mr. Leon- dras Williams, Physical Educa tion, Durham City Schook. The winners were: Talent Contest: First place, Brenda Jenkins, Durham, N. C.; second place, Edwina Riley, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; third place, Thomasine Ivey, Sumpter, S. C. Malissa Sampson of Durham, N. C. and a member of the Young Ladies of Utopia Club modeled as a non-contestant, representing the Young Adults. Mrs. Ruby Bolden of Dur ham, N. C., determined the fi nal winner on the basis of total scores submitted by the judges for each contestant. Mrs. Alzernon Bolen, Presi dent of the S. E. A. of Colored Women’s and Girls Clubs, pre sented the prizes for each of the first, second and third place winners in each contest. Mrs. William Latham Taylor, National Supervisor of Girl's Club installed the newly elect ed officers of the youth clubs and the Young Ladies (Adults) clubs of the Southeastern As sociation of Colored Girl’s Club. The Youth Night was termi nated by a dance in the Wash ington Duke Ballroom, music by the Jammers. Mrs. Alice M. Davis and Mrs. Edith M. Johnson served as co- chairmen of the Southeastern Regional Convention for Girls.
