Mrs. Esther Barnes, Treasurer Smelling our flowers while we live and can smile as we say “Thanks”; is a desire of many but enjoyed by too few. The N. C. Federation estab lished this year three “Recog nition Medals.” One for “Leadership”, a medal engraved with the gavel of authority. One for “Proficiency” en graved with the lamp of knowl edge. One for “Loyalty” engraved with a victory statue of a wo man. During the 1967 Annual Con vention the N. C. Federation Medals were awarded the fol lowing women: 1. “Leadership Medal” to Mrs. E. M. Si>ellman of Eliza beth City, immediate past pres ident, and to Mrs. A. B. Byrd of Rocky Mount, immediate past chairman of the Executive Board. 2. “Proficiency Medal” to Mrs. Esther Barnes of Greens boro retiring treasurer after 30 years of service. 3. “Loyalty Medal” to Miss Wilhelmenia Crossen of Greens boro and Boston; a close asso ciate with all programs and work of the Federation since coming to N. C. as President of Palmer Institute, and to Mrs. Lucille Albright of Selma, re tiring because of health condi tions as director of Girls’ Club Federation where she had given much service. All these women have given the federation many years of their best in services. Others have done the same. This is a starting point for our awards medal as these women leave office. We db plan to make it an annual feature. Other Recognitions Opportunity comes each year to present names and records of N. C. women to the Southeast ern and the National Associa tions for their program of rec ognitions. During the Southeastern Bi ennial Convention in Durham they honored Mrs. E. M. Spell man, N. C.’s only living past president, a beautiful plaque. Outstanding women of three other states were presented plaques also. At the same time twelve N. C. Newsome President’s Message The half-way mark of my term of office came rather quickly, and now as I stand on ^d-Ground facing the end of •the two year period; I swell with the feeling of gratitude and appreciation. Aesop said — “Gratitude is the sign of noble souls.” This I hope is true in my case. It is my wish. My feeling of ap preciation is first to God and then to all the N. C. Federated Club Women. Your cooperation I have re ceived with benefits, and with gratitude I repay my first in stalment of the debt I owe. Mrs. Ann Lindbergh says: “One can never pay in grati tude, one can only pay — ‘in kind’ — somewhere else in life.” I am trying to do just that. Today is your day and mine, the only day we have, the day in which we play our part. What part may signify in the great whole we may not now understand; but we are here to play it and now is our time, not tomorrow, it could be too late. Our part we know is one of action, not of whining. It is a part of love, understanding, imity, not cynicism. It is for us to express love in terms of human helpfulness for all man kind. I invite you to read and think on the first verse of our Federation Song: From the mountains of Caro lina To the eastern golden sands. There are sisters who need helping. Shall we reach them our hands? 'There are children of our neighbors Who need a mothers’ helping hand. And we are our brothers keep er; Hear their cry throughout the land. Rise! ye daughters of Car’lina”. Gratitude For: Each officer doing what and all she could. Each District on its toes, pushing the state program; pressing ever onward and up ward to give total support. Each Club striving to do its share to make the whole a glowing and grand success. Surely we have done well, we have held out ground these 12 months. No retrogressing that we can pin-point. Our re ports show more clubs sending in reports; more members pay ing fees to State; Region and National. Some increase in con tributions to projects. Please make a careful study of our Financial Secretary’s report in the Journal. Check on your club — on your district. If there is a mistake she will gladly make the correction. Are you satisfied with what you see? Is there room for im provement? See what can be done. “People do not lack strength, they lack wilL” “There is but one virtue — the eternal sacrifice of self.” One mile stone reached this year was that of adopting a re vised Constitution to guide us. This is in line with those of all of our affiliate organiza tions. The revised By-Laws will be done in this c onvention year, as well as a Historical Sketch of our Federation. A good summer is now be hind us and we face at least nine months of w’.iat we hope will be a most rewarding per iod of real well planned and exacted club worlc This alone can assure, us of profitable dis trict and state action, as well as creditable reflections in the National Convention at Chica go in July, 1968. My best I continue to offer you. Fannie T. Newsome Defend the pKX)r and father less: do justice to the afflicted and needy. — Psalm 82:3
