Such productions as “Blos som Time” and “The Student Prince” played there, as did “Sev enth Heaven” and “The Cat and the Canary” to name only a few. One night Tommy sneaked away from home, hied himself to the Athens, and toddled down the same alley that runs along the left side of the theatre today. For the life of us we can’t re member what touring Broadway hit was playing. We do remember it was a hot night, and that the stage door was partly open. Tommp peeped in. liked what he saw and decided to go inside. What he didn’t realize was the fact that the door opened directly into the left wing of the stage, not so very far from stage center. Quite enthused by the lights and glitter, he ran in, and didn’t stop until he was right smack in the middle of a love scene in which the hero and the heroine . were sup posed to be delightfully alone. Tommy broke up the twosome, and threw the audience into con vulsive laughter. He left as speed ily as he had arrived, with the in furiated and embarrassed hero hot on his heels. It was indeed the shortest stage appearance in New Bern’s long theatrical history. The trouble with most people is that they see double when they be gin to look for the things they want. He met death in the initial Jap anese air assault on Wake Island. Remembering Here Our town, situated as it is near Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune, has ample reason to observe Me morial Day. In addition to our own native' sons, countless Marines who got to know New Bern as a- home away from home lost their lives in the great battles of the South Pacific. Stationed here, almost within our city limits, were hundreds of out- of-state soldiers at Camp. Battle. They had casualties, too. L. R.
