IN NEW BERN TODAY
None of us who were privileged
.to hear Dr. William H. Cartwright
;Of Duke University deliver New
Bern High school’s baccalaureate
sermon failed to gain inspiration
from his deep insight.
'2 A learned man and an educator
of national renown, he spoke sim-
’P'.j and sincerely. Employing no
jdramatic gestures, and limiting his
■^’ocabulary to words that even a
child could understand, he brought
an inspirational message that im
pressed everyone.
~Dr. Cartwright spoke in a con
versational tone, and each of the
seniors had the feeling that he was
talking to them personally. He has

a daughter graduating from high
school this year, and she came
down from Durham with her father
for the sermon.
Every local teen-ager knows we
are living in a disturbed world, so
it was encouraging to have Dr
Cartwright bring us an optimistic
message and a challenge to make
the most of our opportunities.
He made it clear that we are
living in the greatest era the world
has ever known, that we have more
blessings than anyone else has had
in the past generations, and that
even more bountiful blessings are
awaiting us if we avail ourselves of
the things that this generation can
achieve.
He reminded us that the wonders
in our American way of life were
provided by ancestors who refused
to be fearful, and he called upon
us to display the same faith and
courage.
We liked Dr. Cartwright, we
liked his message, and in the light
of Memorial Day we understand
more fully the wisdom of his in
spiring remarks. We only wish that
every American could have heard
him. He made us appreciate, as
everyone should, the heritage that
has been handed down to us.

be planted immediately or spread
in thin layers to dry.
Warning. Use extreme care when
handling the sulphuric acid. Be
sure that your container is perfect
ly dry and do not allow water to
splash into the acid. Avoid con
tact of acid with hands or cloth
ing. Should you get acid on your
hands, wash off quickly with soap
and water. It will burn holes in
your clothing.
There are other methods of seed
treatment such as stratification in
the late fall and subjecting to out
side temperatures, and stratifica
tion and subjecting to controlled
temperature in a cold storage room.
We use the latter method with
peach seed in our breeding pro
gram.
When you are ready to plant
your seed, I suggest equal volumes
of a mixture of one-third peat, one-
third sharp clean sand and one-
third of either good garden soil
or well decomposed leaf mold or
compost.

After Two Decades, Veterans
Of Battery A Hold Reunions
Forty years have passed since
World War I, but surviving mem
bers of Battery A, 113th Field Ar
tillery, still hold annual reunions.
Recruited from New Bern and
vicinity, the unit was drafted into
Federal service on July 25, 1917.
It trained at Camp-Sevier and sail
ed on the British SS Armagh on
May 27, 1918.
Battery A fired its first shot at
the enemy on September 1, 1918,
on the road between Berniecourt
and Beaumont. It remained in ac
tion three days, and three days
later saw two more days of action.
On September 12 it started firing
in the St. Mihiel drive, and on
September 24 went into position
in the Bois de Esnes in prepara
tion for the Meuse-Argonne offen
sive, which opened on September
26.
On September 29 the battery
went forward as part of the 1st
Battalion. It was in position eight
days, four days of which the bat
talion was the sole support of a
regiment of infantry.
Withdrawn from the Argonne on
October 6, Battery A went into po
sition northeast of Dommartin on
October 11. It engaged in all ope
rations of the 79th and 33rd Divi-
sions on that part of the Woevro
sector, right up to the Armistice
on November 11, 1918.
Always in the thick of the fight
ing, it was the battery’s proud
boast that in its 78 days at the
front it never fired over the
heads of any other artillery unit.
Commisioned officers, with Capt.
John H. Wendell first command
ing, included 1st • Ut. W. B. R.
Guion, 2nd Lts. Beverly S. Roy
ster, Jr., and David R. Morris. En
listed strength was 164 men. Later
Capt. Robert M. Hanes, much be
loved by surviving members, as
sumed command until promot^ to
major in February 1919.
