Page 2 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, June 6, 1958 TOT ^ALK When Katherine Kinsey Whit- ford (now Mrs. James L. Barnes, Jr,, of Wilson) had a party cele brating her sixth birthday, it made news around the world. It happened on the afternoon of March 10, 1939, at her home on Ch’aven street, with 25 of her young friends on hand to help her whoop it up. When we say they whooped it up, we mean just that. You see, Katherine had the whooping cough, and her heart was all but broken at the thought of not having a party. Fortunately for the occasion, most of her play mates were either in the midst of whooping cough too, or had already overed it. Katherine’s mother, Mrs. Annie lunsey Whitford, sent out invita tions to the past and present whoopers, and everybody showed For Expert Plumbing at Reasonal Prices, Cali James L. Cayton ME 7-9389 N. C. License 1697 up. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. The story spread like wildfire. For example, the New York Herald- Tribune gave it a choice spot on the'front page and other newspa pers around the globe played it up in like manner. Kids present for the party in cluded Marea Kafer, Emma McCot- ter, Agnes Barden, Mary Windley Dunn, Patty Shipp, Karen Craw ford, Patricia Collins, Theresa Mc- Sorley, Betty Morrison, Betty Jo Blanchard, Laurence Stith, Jr., Jim my Kennedy, Charles Johnson, Jr., Harry and Robert Shriver, Ben Gillikin, Jr., Roy Fagan, Jr., Billy Smith, Buck Pugh, Gary Maxwell, Joan Bray, Bobby Foote, David Hen derson and Billy and Jack Treva- than. Helping Mrs. Whitford in an ef fort to keep the happy brats from wrecking the house were her own mother, Mrs. Katie Cook, Mrs. Wil ey Crawford and Florrie Gibbs, (now Mrs. Redmund Dill). Mrs. Hel en Cannon Mewborn told stories to the youngsters, in between the whoops. June Designated As Dairy Month in All North Carolina Throughout June literally hun dreds of persons in North Caro lina will join hands in a common effort to call attention to this state’s booming dairy industry— from the dairy cow to the chilled carton of fresh milk left on your doorstep. To say that the North Carolina dairy industry is big business and is important to the state’s economy would be trite—yet it is a fact that seldom gains the attention of the average person on the street. Suf fice to say that North Carolina has some 35,000 individual farm fami lies who are in the business of keeping cows to produce milk. The gross dairy farm income in this state climbed over the billion dol lar mark in 1957. Just the cows on the state’s dairy farms were valued at about $38.5’’million. The average grade A dairyman in North Carolina with a 24-cow milk ing herd has an estimated $27,000 invested in animals and dairy equipment alone. GARDEN TIME What are the plants food ele ments in a fertilizer and what part does each play? We speak of a complete fertilizer as one that con tains the major elements, nitrogen, phosphorous and potash, commonly referred to as N, P and K. These elements are combined on a per centage basis such as 8 per. cent nitrogen, 8 per cent phosphorous, and 8 per cent potash, or 10-10-10 or 0-14-14, etc. What does nitrogen do? It gives a dark green color to plants, pro motes leaf and stem growth, miakes leafy crops crisp, produces rapid early growth. Tn excessive amounts it may delay maturity. Phosphor ous? Stimulates early root forma tion and growth, hastens mdttirity, especially importahtdh seed forma tion. Potash? Imparts vigor and disease resistance, increases plumpness of gain and seed and is essential in the formation and movements of sugar and starches in the plants. These are the major elements. What about the so-called minor elements? Calcium, magnesium, sulphur, iron, zinc, copper, etc. They are important too but are required in lesser amounts. Boron is commonly added to certain fertilizer mixtures for specific crop needs so let's see what it does. Prevents cracked stem in celery, cracking of sweet potatoes, hollow stem in cauliflower and broccoli and cork spots in apples. All of the nutrient elements play impor tant parts, and if they become deficient in the soil, are expressed in different ways on the foliage or stem of the plant. A peach grower brought in some twigs last week which showed a sharp deficiency in magnesiimi, and so it goes. The only safe meth od of determining nutrient con dition of your soil is by a soil test. Fertilizers are beneficial in proper amount but can be extreme ly deterimental if not used in the right proportion and placed proper ly around the seed or young roots of plants. A friend brought in some azalea plants which she had killed by over fertilization and improper placement. L. R.
