Page 2 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, Julyjs, 1958 Buds AND Blossoms By MAMIE MILLER ter lilies are usually white, or pink and yellow. Only the wealthy peo ple in the Holy Land could have water lilies. The odor is heavy and mysterious. The seed is used for grain, and the stems are eaten by man. Our lily pads are beautiful. Now is a good time to enjoy your lily pool, pond, or bog spots. Aqua tic and bog plants require a cer tain amount'of moisture all the time. Many plants that may be grown by pools and ponds are shade loving plants such as fuchsias, azaleas, tropical plants and ferns Many plants require their natur al forest conditions. Around a pool we will need rocks,, ornamental wa ter driftwoods and garden acces sories. Well weathered timbers and “And the chapiters that were upon the top of the pillars were of lily work in the porch, four cubits . . . And upon the top of the pillars was lily wbrk: and so the work of the pillars finished. And lie made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other . . . And it was one hand breadth thick, and the brim there of was wrought like a brim of a cup, with flowers of lilies.”—I Kings 7:19, 22, 23, 26. Tl'.e interior decoration of the utensiLs of Solomon’s Temple were done or supervised by Hiram of Tyre The above lilies are the wa ter lilies that grow in the Holy Land They are mostly blue. I National Club Leaders Plan Meeting Here New Bern will be very much in the limelight on October 6, 7 and 8, Meeting here those three days will be the executive board of the National Council of Federated Garden Clubs. Although arrangements haven’t been completed for this major event, there’ll be outstanding per sonalities on hand, including North Carolina’s governor, Luther Hodg es. Selection of New Bern for the sessions is a tribute to the mem bers of the New Bern Garden club whose efforts to beautify our his toric first stale capital have been noteworthy. In the past, only America’s larg er cities have been fortunate in landing the meeting of the exec utive board. Hence, this city can be* proud of its achievement. Needless to say, the event will bring considerable publicity to the town and stale. stumps and cypress knees may make beautiful designs. If you wish to build a small pool, excavate the ground about six inches deep and all sides that you expect your pool to be. Fill hole with gravel level, tap down smooth or cover with chicken wire. Pour cement, one part cement to three parts gravel and sand. Add water sufficiently to pour smooth ly. This will make a layer four or five inches thick. The next day you may add a coat of cement mortar, applied with a trowel. Hindu lotus, water hyacinth, wa ter lilies and ferns do well in a pool all summer, but most of them have to be protected in winter. Bayard Taylor says, “In the Gar den of Roses”: “But who will watch my lilies, When the blossoms open white? By day the sun shall be sentry. And the moon and stars by night!” SUBSCRIBE TO THE MIRROR Four out of five tennis points are won on opponents’ errors according to Bill Talbert, former captain of the U. S. Davis Cup team.
