Cone, Greensboro textile magnate known as the "blue denim king,’’ who ac quired the land, built a white- columned summer home on it, dam med up two mountain streams to form lakes, and planted extensive apple orchards and pastures. That took place around the turn of the century. When Mr. Cone died in 1908, his will specified that his widow would occupy the estate un til her death. It was then to be come property of Ihs State of North Carolina^ Mrs. Cone died in 194:/, and a few years later the State of North Carolina transferred the estate to the Federal Government to become an attraction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Read This From Billings, Mqnt., to Bangor, Maine, and across the country in every other direction, post offices are receiving such customary in quiries as these; “A month ago I left ior a week’s vacation and gave you a forward ing order. I’ve been back a week now and am not receiving any mail. Why?’’ “When I returned from my va cation; I could not find in our mail box some yery valuable let ters which I was expecting. What do you think could have happened to them?” “I moved away from New Bern a year ago on temporary assign ment. I have been back three weeks now but have received no mail. What’s happened to the serv ice?” These and other important sea sonal mail problems can.be avoid ed if vacationers will 1. Be certain that they leave at the post office full,and accurate written instructions about what to dp with their mail while they are away. If one plans to spend the summer at Oceanside, for example, he should not let the post oTfice guess that he has gone to Ocean- view. 2. Don’t allow mail to accumulate in your mail box while you are away. Overstuffed mail boxes in vite thievery. Ask a neighbor or a friend to pick up your mail and hold it for you until you return. Accessible only by foot or on horseback, the lake Is open for public fishing. Further back in the forested estate lands which reach across Flat Top Mountain is Trout Lake, a few minutes walk from a paved road. It looks like a fishennan’s dream come true. The unpaved roads which circle Bass Lake and wind across the pas tures and woodlands on the estate are reserved for pedestrian, horse back or carriage use. You can walk, ride or drive for more than 20 miles without encountering a sin gle automobile. If you ride up to the crest cl Flat Top Mountain you will see the graves of Mr. and Mrs. Cone, surrounded by dark green spruce trees and a low iron fence.
