Page 5 As S—n in Tti« Mirror's SPORTS CT\0^^ ‘ N. of Athloti of Athletes and Events It’s a pretty good bet that the Bears of New Bern High school will be facing a lot of forward passes this season. They should fare rather well on the ground, defensively, and if this proves to be the case it is a fore^ gone conclusion that the opposition will take to the air early and often. This could prove disastrous. The quickest way to travel in football is by the aerial route, providing of course that you’ve’ got somebody who can throw with reasonable ac curacy, and a good set of receiv ers. No coach has ever been able to set up a sure-fire pass defense. Sam Arbes, like his predecessor, Joe Caruso, will have some un happy moments because of this major headache. Fortunately for the Bruins, their opponents are going to be plagued, as always, with the selfsame prob- G«nerator-Star»*r and Regulator Rebuilding and Repaiti Exide Batleriat SANDLIN BATTERY VULCANIZING CO. 125 Craven Street TONY'S DRUG ^ STORE ME 7-4060 - Free Delivery - L R. The locals are bound to do some passing too, and the results might be gratifying if not spectac ular. However, a passing attack can be just as damaging to the offense as it is to the defense. Many a ball game has been lost by a costly in terception. Still more games are going to be lost sodner or later in Northeastern Conference circles. Incidentally, Coach Arbes has wisely decided to have co-captains named for each game during the 1958 season, with the permanent co-captains selected when the final contest with Kinston’s Red Devils comes up. He figures, and we think rightly, that each of the deserving seniors on his squad should be given rec ognition during the course of. the season. Picking permanent co-cap tains before the season even gets underway could easily break the spirit of some player—maybe sev eral. There’s no. need to take this risk. Has a member of the fair sex ever been an official baseball scor er? That the latest sports query to come our way, and the answer is yes. As a matter of fact, it happened right here in the late lamented Coastal Plain League. Goldsboro’s Ruth Pate was the gal, and she proved to be quite efficient. Aside from that, she was an outstanding church organist. Did any Coastal Plain League player ever clout four home runs in one afternoon? Again the answer is yes. Snow Hill’s Joe Bistroff did it against the New Bern Bears in a doubleheader reeled off on June 9, 1939. The big backstop clobbered three in the first game to give the Hill Billies an easy 11 to 3 victory. He added another in the nitecap. Snow Hill won that one, too, 7 to 4. HARD TO TAME—Keeping Buzzy Holton under control is a |ob that other Northeastern Conference teams don't relish. His great work at guard for New Bern High iast season made him a popular choice for All-Conference honors. He can tote a pigskin, and is capabie of holding down the fuliback assignment if necessary. Strong and scrappy, he is a Bear who wili bear watching on any gridiron. They never com^ too tough for Buzzy. ance for that. Of course, if you take a notion to call somebody famous, just as a prank, your chances of talking to them may be slim. Foreign dig nitaries, even as celebrities on our side of the Atlantic and Pacific, usually have non-listed telephones to avoid being pestered. But like we said, if you’ve got twelve bucks it’s a cinch that you can talk to somebody somewhu'e, and that somewhere can be a long way from New Bern.
