IN NEW BERN TODAY
New Bern High school will have
four majorettes this year—three of
them juniors and one a freshman.
Linda Harrison is to be head
majorette, succeeding Jo Carole
BlcDaniel, who graduated. Edythe
Bodenheimer also graduated.
Janeth Hill and Frances McSor-
ley are the other juniors who will

be strutting with Linda, and the
freshman is Marita Land.
Graduating is bringing changes
in the high school band too. No
less than 17 bandsmen were lost
by the diploma route. However,
at least 40 of the 65 musicians
counted on by the capable and pop
ular director are experienced, so
we should have another fine year.
Hoping to develop a two-band
system, Mr. Dave Walters will have
approximately a dozen inexperienc
ed members in an alternate unit.
In this way he will be able to
speed their instruction.
Walters believes in exposing his
musicians to as many good com
positions as possible, and during
a school year they’ll work to some
extent on perhaps 35 or 40
marches.
He realizes that the band would
be more proficient in the playing
of two or three marches, if it con
centrated on these alone. However,
he feels that his pupils should get
a maximum of training and experi
ence, and that the Only way to give
them versatility is to work on a
wide range of music.
One problem for which he has
no solution is the fact that some of

New Bern’s annual drive for
funds to bring the North Carolina

in September. It deserves the sup

good music.

football players. So far no one has
figured out a way for a boy to run

play a French horn in the stands at
the same time.
There's nothing like a good band
to add to the enjoyment of a ball
game. We’ve got the band, the
majorettes, the cheerleaders and
the team. Keep your fingers cross
ed for a wonderful season.
Quite a few of our high school
singers have contributed their time

Sunday.
Our director of music, Mr. Don

contacted, and of course we were
happy to take part in something
that meant so much to the spiritual
life of our community.
