Friday, Septemoer 12, 1958 If : ou happen to have a child attending Central Elementary Bchool, you've no doubt been listen ing to rave notices about the chili that Mrs, Verna Gray Hopkins pre pares for the days when hot dogs are on the menu. If local small fry had their way, they would never have a school lunch that didn’t include hot dogs. As it is, they get them about once every 10 days, in keep- Damage from Weed Disease Can Be Less MOWI CHMNU HOr ntOMYMR»$VCHAtt Just press a button and SILENT SOUND’ tunes TV from across the room ’KOIL nMEconmi Reaiil* CMtrel TV Twlag ing with efforts to provide a bal anced diet. Mrs. Hopkins, who has two chil dren of her own, manages the Central lunchroom. She takes her job mighty seriously, and the youngsters she feeds are quite aware of that fact. This is her fifth year in charge of the lunchroom, and prior to that she worked as one of the assistants. Each summer she heads for Wom an’s College in Greensboro, where she avails herself of every avail able course in dietetics, Although her formal'^Seducation ended when she received her high school diploma, she holds her own with graduate dieticians whenever she takes a course' at Woman’s college. This summer, for example, she got an A for the course she took. Unless we miss our guess, she probably learned to make the 'tow'ii’s most-talked-about chili be fore she ever darkened the door of a college classroom. One thing is for sure, local mothers could do worse than get her recipe. There are other tasty items that she cooks up, of course, as she goes about the business of pleasing kids and keeping their menus wholesome at one and the same time. Nothing, however, approaches the popularity of her incomparable chili. . . Nematodes, which reduce the value of the tobacco crop in North Carolina an estimated $15 to $20 million each year, can be reduced considerably by the use of cer tain fall cultural practices, accord ing to Ralph Sasser, assistant farm agent for Duplin county. Sasser said farmers should cut tobacco stalks as soon as possible after harvest and turn the stubbles in such a manner as to expose as many roots as possible to the sun and wind. “If these fall cultural practices are followed along with soil fumi gation in the spring and a good crop rotation, farmers should have fair success in controlling nema todes,” he declared. The assistant agent said there are many tobacco fields where the stalks are left standing for a long time after harvest, thus increasing the population of nematodes in the soil. He also pointed out that to bacco roots damaged by nematodes increase the danger of black shank and other diseases. HINTS TO HOMEMAKERS AT NO EXTRA cotr!
