Page 2 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, October 3, I95g How To Stop Accidents Before They Happen ' By Jeanne Smith, Dodge Safety Conaultant “ WOMEN’S GROUPS can help check accidents this Spring through their Support of the national Safety-Check program. The ♦dluntary program, conducted each May immediately pre ceding Itammer and racation travel, gives motorists tangibie prddf that SM'tO the^ ndi keep thtir oari In safe driving eort- ditidn. Last year, Ohd Out of ev ery five of thd twO-and- a-hSlfniiliion vehicles, in- speoted in Miss Smith 130(1 communities needed im mediate attention. At least one Of these major items was faulty: brakes, front and rear lights, steering, tires, exhaust system, glass, windshieid wipers, rear view mirror and horn. ' The Inter-Industry Highway Safetjl Committee, which spon- Boi’s the program, hopes that in 1958 we will increase the num ber of free community Safety- Cliecks. Here are two important ways in which women’s groups can support the programi 1. Find out if a community safety-check is being planned in your area. If not, contact public officials, key civic leaders, police and others to offer your help in getting one under way. Serve on community committees to get your neighbors interested in the project. 2. During the Safety-Check program, be sure that yOur i family automobile is inspected ' and encourage your friends , and neighbors to do likewise. More than 48 million. Or two out of every three registered ve hicles, are now being driven without any official inspection for safe operating condition. Ac cording to M. R. Darlington, Jr., managing director of the pro gram, Safety-Checks can help stop accidents before they hap pen. Mercerized means that the cot ton has more luster and is strong er. Combed cotton means more lus ter. It keeps its smooth feel through washing and wearing. Some corduroys are machine washable, and others are only hand washable because their colors won’t stand up under the hot water in the machine. If you expect to ma chine wash, look for “machine washable” on the label. Never take it for granted. Wrinkle-resistant finishes are new for corduroy. They work. SAVE THE LABEL—It’s a guide for care. It may give you detailed directions for care. MAY BRITT After one glance at the women wearing the Korean national costume for Dick Powell's Twentieth Century-Fox Cinema- Scope, De Luxe Color production of "The Hunters," Bob Wagner said to Robert Mitchum; "Now we know where the sack came from." Mitchum, who plays the part of a jet fighter pilot in the ac tion film which also stars Rich ard Egan, May Britt and Lee Philips, replied: "Yes, unless all those women are wearing ma ternity dresses." The picture starts Sunday at Kehoe Theatre. SUBSCRIBE TO THE MIRROR Mr. Nat Says: 65 million meals are served daily in public dining rooms . . . 95% are cooked by GAS CALL US TODAY . . LAWRENCE & CRAYTON TOT KTALK Like everyone else who brings a young puppy into the household, Lila Mae Jones, 10, of 1815 Wil mington street, had a sleeping pro blem with her tiny Mexican chi huahua. Squeaky is hi.s name, and when he squeaks in the wee small hours it sounds more like a squall. Fortu nately, his nocturnal sqeaking is over now. Lila Mae found the answer, and a simple answer it was. Instead of putting a ticking clock or an old shoe in his bed, or re sorting to one of the other so call ed cures for a wailing puppy’s loneliness, she remembered the stuffed make believe dog that she got for Christmas. That night Squeaky had a bed fellow that didn’t snore, kick the cover off, or bark in his sleep. He was mighty nice to cuddle up to, and the little dog slept all night. So far the novelty hasn’t worn off, and by the time Squeaky figures out what the score is he’ll probably be old enough to sleep alone and enjoy it. They won’t romp with ypu, as squeaky soon found out. On the’ other hand, or the other paw as dogs say it, stuffed dogs don’t steal your food, nip your hind legs when you aren’t looking, or give you an extra supply of fleas to worry over. Besides, Squeaky gets along tine by himself during the broad open daylight. It’s those dark dismal hours when Lila Mae and her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Jones, are asleep that make him uneasy. That’s why the happiest little puppy in town these days is sing ing the praises of stuffed dogs. “They’re quite the stuff,” he says.
