P;mL> 2 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, November 14, 1953 i' TOT TALK Every New Bern parent knows what it means to have a child whining at their heels In a public place. Maybe the brat wants candy, a swig of pop or an expensive and (iltcriy impractical toy. At any rate, such .scenes are enough to make all of us grow old before our time. Hill Travis of the Charlotte Ob- scr\er tells a good one along this line, and is ready to swear that it actually happened. He gives the location as Lisk’s soda shop on Selwyn Avenue, and claims it oc- cun-od after Sunday school on a t.\pical Sabbath morning. A heavy-set woman walked into the soda shop, followed by sandy- liaircd boy who appeared to be 6 or 1 hereabouts. ‘T promised Lucius Ed buy him a Pepsi-Cola if he be haved,” she told the proprietor, Cl.vde Lisk, “and for once he was Transistors BULOVA Hercules ALL-TRANSISTOR RADIO Most powerful transistor radio of its size! Lucius took a big gulp of the drink and let out a howl. He spat the stuff on his mother’s lovely blue dress. “I don’t want that nasty mess,” he yelled, and his yell was loud enough to extend into a consider able section of Charlotte, Whereupon his mother wore him to a frazzle, right then and there. “I’ll teach you,” she fumed, “Bel lowing two days for a Pepsi-Cola, and now won’t even drink it.” Lit tle Lucius, shrieking to high heav en, was marched out of the soda shop, and they drove away in a burst of speed. It wasn’t until a plump and elderly gentlemen set up a similar howl, minutes later, that the truth came out. It seems that the pro prietor of the soda shop had given Willie, his Negro porter, permis sion to take home all the left over coffee drained from the urn each night at closing time. Willie had put the coffee in a gallon jug that was labeled “Pepsi Cola Syrup” and stored it under the counter until he knocked off work late Sunday. Lisk himself mis took the contents for syrup, and dumped it in the soda fountain. liams and wife, Martha T, 'Wil- Hams. Property In No. 3 Township. Henry W.
