Friday, November 21, 1958 THE NEW BERN MiRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page 3 News For Veterans Spanish-Aiherican War veterans should not assume that Veterans Administration can pay bills for their care in non-VA hospitals, the agency cautioned. A substantial numb®); of these veterans have entered private hos pitals under the assumption that their care would be at VA expense and later have found they were not eligible for this benefit. The veteran and their families have had to accept responsibility for the cost of the hospitalization, which often has been extensive. VA said some Spanish-American War veterans apparently have con fused their eligibility for VA out patient care with eligibility for hos pitalization. Disabilities of Spanish-American War veterans are not automatical ly considered service-connected on application for hospital treatment Give Your Favorite Furniture > a New Lease eh Life. The agency can pay non-VA hos pital bills of veterans only under certain extremely limiting condi tions. The veteran must'require emer gency hospital care for a-service- connected disability for which dC' lay in treatment oy travel to the nearest VA hospital would be ex tremely hazardous. Since few Spanish-American War veterans have disabilities that are service-connected for purposes of hospital treatment, the number eli gible for care in non-VA hospitals at VA expense is very limited.
