Pasjc 2 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, November 28, 1958 TOT ^ALK No other show on television to day has caught the fancy of New Beni's small fry like the tremen dously popular “Mickey Mouse Club ’ Beamed from Greenville, it has a high percentage of the kids in town glued to their sets each afternoon. Unlike a lot of programs de- .sigiK'\i for the enjoyment of smaller children, this one attracts teen agers too. In fact, one of ■ftlickey's biggest rooters here is a grea: grandmother. There is ob- r ious’y appeal for every age in the antic,' of Mickey and his friends. Runner-up in popularity, as far as New Bern moppets are con cerned, is that grand old standby, “Captain Kangaroo.” With all due respects to the Captain, we suspect that this might develop into a rather dull show, if Mr. Green Jeans failed to put in an appear ance. Although hardly in the same clas.s with the two front runners, a .sample survey here indicates that the "Pop-Eye” show has caught on l'airl\ well. Trailing rather badly is "Rorriper Room.” It hasn’t been the same since Mi.ss Lucia departed, and no one was quicker, to recog nize this fact than the tots who worshipped her. Putting together a kid program that will click is just as difficult and perplexing as coming up with a top flight production for adult audiences. Talent is a must, but FOR GOOD FOOD & REFRESHMENT, It's The Wiggly Pig even talent— coupled with expen sive props— doesn’t always pay off. One thing you may be sure of. New Bern kids aren’t devoting all of their television viewing to westerns and crime. Most of them, our survey reveals, prefer Mickey Mouse to Mickey Spilane’s sordid creations. In other words, Walt Disney is doing better with a mouse than Spilane has done with rats spawned by gangland. If you’re a parent, this may be a comfort to you. As a matter of fact, there was no specific day observed in all sections of the United States .until 1864, when President Lincoln “appointed and set aside” the last Thursday in November as a day of national thanksgiving. Earlier, in the course of the Re volutionary War, the Continental Congress designated Dec. 18, 1777, to be observed as a “thanksgiving day.” However, it was conceived not as a harvest festival but to cel ebrate the surrender of Burgoyne. When George Washington be came President, he recommended that Nov. 26, 1789, be kept as a day of “national thanksgiving” for the establishment of our form of gov ernment. After Lincoln’s Thanksgiving proclamation, designating the last Thursday in November, the day was generally observed until 1939, That year. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in order to lengthen the interval between Thanksgiving and Christmas, named the next to the last Thursday in November. The new day failed to get un animous acceptance, so in Decem ber 1941 Congress passed a resolu tion making the fourth Thursday in November a legal holiday. There is little likelihood that the date will ever be changed again. Whatever the date, New Bernians and all thinking Americans feel better in their hearts because their native land does officially recog nize the blessings that come from God. Yes, it was a quiet Thanksgiving Day— this one we had in 1958. But in its quietness you could sense the feelings of Protestant, Catholic and Jew. We had much to be grate ful for, we knew it, and citizens in the First State Capital breathed a little prayer of thankfulness.
