Page 8 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Teen Topics Greenville Higlr school did us a far bigger favor than it realized at the time, when it sent its Rockettes liere for the annual football game between our Bears and the Green- ies. They put on a, beautiful show, with their precision routines, and right away everybody who saw it sat up and took notice. ^The fans loved it, and students and school officials here became very con scious of the fact that we were be ing outclassed by a neighboring IN NEW BERN TODAY school. We’re not going to be outclassed very long. Seeing the handwriting on the wall, or the football field, we are now well on our way to having our own array of stellar performers. All of us know that we have just as much talent available as any other school, and the discontinu ance of girls basketball makes ev ery girl who is able to qualify available. Since we’re getting a late start this year, the program is designed for juniors, sophomores and fresh men. A lot of us who are seniors would like to participate too, but we agree that long range planning is the only way to accomplish what is hoped for. We were very proud of our sen ior and junior bands when they came by in the annual Christmas parade. They were a credit to our school, but then they always are. Those majorettes looked cute, too. Now that Thanksgiving is over the students are really getting Christmas in their bones. Along 'with our school activities that are connected with holiday things, ma ny of us are going to take part in the Christmas , music at our re spective churches. Wasn’t the Christmas concert by our a capella choir and the boys and girls choruses beautifully pre sented? The performance will make the anniversary of the Christ Child’s birth more meaningful for all of us. 1 / Judge Bryan Still Interested in City It’s been years since Judge Shep ard Bryan, now living in Atlanta, left New Bern, but he still loves the town. Someone sent him a copy of The Mirror recently, so this week on the eve of his 87th birthday he talked with his sister, Mrs. E. H. Jordan, on the telephone. He wanted a subscription, and needless to say Mrs. Jordan prompt ly took care of the matter. We send our best wishes to the Judge, along with many happy returns of the day from other New Bernians. Your One-Stop Farm and Garden Supply Store 1013 QUEEN STREET ME 7-4319 The N. C. Agriculture Experi ment Station and U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture have an nounced the release of two new rab- biteye blueberry varieties for pro pagation. The new varieties, Garden Blue and Menditoo, are adapted for the central coastal plain of the state and other areas of similar climate. In repeated tests. Garden Blue has been a consistant high yielder of medium sized fruit. The plant is vigorous, upright, spreading in growth with the fruit well distribut ed on long fruiting shoots which make picking easier. Garden Blue berries average 130- 135 per half-pint cup. They are round, firm, blue, with good flavor and have a small dry scar. In East ern North Carolina the fruit begins ripening in mid-June and are through ripening by mid-July. According to Dr. Franklin E. Cor- rell, horticultural scientist for the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Sta tion, the Garden Blue appears to be well-adapted to home garden cul ture because of its vigorous growth and good quality fruit. The second new variety, Mendi- tbo, is notable for its highly flav ored, large sized berries that av erage 95 to 100 per half-pint. The fruit begins ripening about a week later than Garden Blue and ripens over a six to eight-week peri od. The plants have a medium vig or, a spreading habit of growth, and loose medium sized fruit clusters. Dr. Correll said Menditoo is sug gested for local market and home garden use because -of its large fruit size and high quality. Both of these new varieties were developed on commercial farms in Eastern North Carolina. The princi pal research was conducted by the late Professor Emmett Morrow Dr. Correll said the rabbiteye has the following advantages over high land blueberries: (1) it grows on a wider range of soils, (2) requires a shorter cold rest period, (3) is not as sensitive to soil acidity, and (4) is more heat and drought resist ant. Neither the N. C. Agricultural Friday, December 12, 1958 Experiment Station nor USDA have plants for distribution. Jack Finch of Bailey and J. M. Batchelor of Willard do have rooted cuttings and older plants. DON'T SETTLE FOR LESS THAN THE BEST Robertson's Welding Service 1107 N.
