ed States. It is recognized as the
most cherished Christmas plant.

There are many colors of the
poinsettia; namely white, pink, red
and cream. They are an expression
of “Joy To The World.”
There is a beautiful legend con
cerning the flower that we love to
remember. At the time of the Birth
of Christ, everyone was carrying
gifts to the Christ Child. One poor
little girl had nothing to carry. The
good angel appeared to her and
said, “Go to the altar of the Christ
.Child, look down at your feet, pick
a weed and place it at His feet.”
The child did as directed and
much to her surprise when she
gazed upon the earth the whole
field was covered with beautiful
red blossoms.
The red of the poinsettia is real
ly the leaf. The yellow of the cen
ter is the flower. It is said it rep
resents the crown of thorns that
Christ wore. The red represents
His blood, and the green repre
sents life eternal.
Leave evergreens in a solution
of 2 gals, of water and 1 cup of
brown sugar to insure freshness
To make tree fireproof—soak in
gal. of warm water, 1 cup boric
acid and Va cup Borax. Spray ev
ergreens and tree in the solution
Be careful with lights and stand
ing on objects which might cause
you to fall. Enjoy a beautiful

Language Barrier
No Halt To Safety

THERE’S NOTHING new about
the idea of driver training schools,
but Chicago’s Driver Improve
ment School has one unique fea
ture: classes
are now of
fered in Span
ish and Polish
as well as
English.

court: “In the past several years
Chicago has had a large influx of
Puerto Ricans and displaced per
sons from Poland.
“While some of these people
have language barriers, they
still drive cars . . . These
classes were established to as
sist them to become safer
drivers.”
Chicago’s Driver Improvement
School itself was begun in Oc
tober, 1966, and Spanish and Pol
ish classes were later added when
some of those attending could not
understand the proceedings.
Currently, at least one foreign
language class is scheduled every
month. Some of the material was
even shipped from Puerto Rico.
Classes are open to anyone
over 15 who understands Span
ish or Polish, but docs not
speak English. Instruction is
given for four weeks, once a
week for two hours, for a total
of eight hours. '
At the last class, an official
from the Secretary of State’s
office is present to administer
written driver permit tests, trans
lated into one of the two langu
ages, so potential drivers can be
tested, under optimum conditions.
And lightens every load.

Snow slowed up New Bern’s

but in recent days and at night too,
the mad rush has been on.

fair weather or foul, most of us
get around to emptying our purses
to remember those who hold a
place in our heart.

spoonfuls of compound of spirits
of ammonia.

scorched or burned, drop a small

immediately and the scorched taste

Q How can I remove oil stains
from wash fabrics?
A—By rubbing with lard, allow
ing it to stand over night, then
washing in cold water and soap,
and drying in the sun.
Q—How can I prevent tennis
racket strings from breakirig?
A—The strings should be cover
ed with petroleum jelly before put
ting away for the winter. This will
prevent them from snapping dur
ing the time the rackets are not in
use.
Q—How can I make tough soap
bubbles for the children?
A—Tough soap bubbles can be
blown by using the following li
quid; 2 parts of dry castile soap,
30 parts of glycerine, 40 parts of
water.
Q—How can I clean brass or coo.

gar with the same amount of salt
and boil for a ’few minutes. Wash
thoroughly and rinse in hot water.
