It isn’t hard to imagine what
Coach Jeff Hockaday of the New
Bern high school basketball team
is hoping Santa Claus will bring
him.
What he wants most of all is a
successful campaign in the tough
Northeastern conference that lies
ahead. He isn’t expecting a cham
pionship in his stocking, but if
Saint Nick pulls a terrific surprise
and delivers it, Hockaday will be
lieve in the jolly old fellow the
rest of his born days.
Along with victories, the local
basketball coach is hoping for an
absence of further injuries and
great improvement in the mediocre
play of his charges. He is espe
cially anxious to find an assurance
of more field goals, when he looks
under the Hockaday tree tomor
row morning. ^
Coach Sam Arbes is eagerly
awaiting a visit from Santa Claus,
too. He wants the patron saint of

NOT so MERRY — This won't
be a particular joyful Yuletide
for Stevie Hines. He had his
heart set on a fine basketball
season with the New Bern High
school Bears, but a shoulder in

stocking. If Saint Nick will just

New Bern sports fans are look
ing to Santa Claus for an abund
ance of thrills in all of the town’s
■athletic activities, including wrest
ling, baseball and track programs
at New Bern high. The fans, them
selves, can help along this line by
giving these sports the same sup
port that football and basketball

As for the players, they'll go to
sleep tonight with_ dreams of glory,
rather than sugar plums, dancing
