[im ies. jrs. kie lel- / As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events A fan wants to know if a set of twins ever played in the Coastal Plain League. The answer is yes— Elmo and Otto Patrick, who per formed for the Kinston Eagles. What was the longest losing streak in Costal Plain history? Well, Tarboro set a record in 1939 that nobody wanted to top. They dropped 27 straight before defeat ing the New Bern Bears at home. Here’s another question from a Mirror reader. Did any Coastal Plain player ever get married at a ball park? A Goldsboro catcher, Bucky Overton, was hitched to his beloved at home plate just before the Goldsboro - Kinston game on July 8, 1940. Bridegrooms are notoriously nerv ous, but Bucky proceeded to collect two hits in three attempts, and led his team to a 5-2 win over the visit ing Eagles. And now, for a final Coastal Plain query. Kinston’s Eric Tipton came through with the greatest kicking ever seen at Pasadena, for the Duke Blue Devils, while two of the loop’s pilots—Kinston’s Herschel Cald well and Ayden’s Happy Campbell contributed to the glory of Ala bama’s famed Crimson Tide. A New Bern resident, R. D. Bask- ervill, has no trouble recalling the Rose Bowl game in which Tipton’s toe kept Southern California in check until the final seconds, when a substitute quarterback tossed a touchdown pass to give the Pacific Coast champions a 7-3 victory. Baskervill was a guard on that Blue Devil team—in fact, ode of the three guards that Wallace Wade had on a squad of 18 re gulars. Despite a lack of reserve strength the Blue Devils were un defeated, untied and unscored on during the season. UNFORGETTABLE — Har ry Soufas has long since stor ed away his baseball togs for keeps, but whenever New Bern fans hold a session of the hot-stove league on these winter nights, they usually get around to a few com ments about his Coastal Plain League feats. Women agree that there must be a place in the home where the washer and dryer can be operated with allied activities, Most women ask for separate laundry units, a built-in ironing board and a pair of porcelain tubs that can be used to hand-wash col- red and white clothing, defrost large items such as 25-pound tur keys, cut flowers and even bathe a baby. The utility room, we are told, should be about 10 by 12 feet, lo cated next to the kitchen, and have a door leading to the backyard. It should be decorated attractively so that a woman will want to work there. It is a very good idea for the util ity areas to have separate electrical circuits so that the washing ma chine and toaster can be operated simultaneously without fear of blowing a fuse. They decried the practice of placing outlets above baseboard level in rooms other than the kitchen and the bathroom. More outlets are need ed in every room in the average home. Outdoor living areas are extreme ly important to the modern family life. However, the tendency of late to ignore the importance of a utility yard that is planned with the same thought and effort as the garden, is always a mistake in a family A recent survey showed the' swimming pool was not favored by the majority of homemakers as a backyard fixture.
