Page Five As Sean in The Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events Even those loyal supporters of other Big Four schools, who would rather have seen their own team win the Dixie Classic than the Wolf Pack of North Carolina State, must admit in all honesty that Coach Everett Case has been a dominant influence upon scholastic basket ball throughout the length and breadth of Tarheelia. The cage game for high schools as well as colleges in our area real ly came into its own when Case ar rived from Indiana and took over the Wolfpack. His success turned the Southern Conference upside down, and before long the kids from Manteo to Murphy were imi' tating Dick Dickey and Sammy Ranzino, and doing rather well at it. Anyone who has beo^n closely .as sociated with high school basket ball in North Carolina over the past quarter of a century can testi fy to the transformation right in our own vicinity. It was little short of astounding. Here in New Bern, and elsewhere in Craveh, Carteret,-Pamlico, Jones and neighboring counties, a new era blossomed overnight. Every ball club, including those repre senting the smallest of rural We need at once several 2 and 3-bedroom homes in or near the city. Call ME 7-6175. LAWRENCE & CRAYTON EDWARDS RADIATOR r r SERVICE Route 5 Highway 17 South Promptness and Experience in Cleaning and Repairing Radiators schools, had the mark of Case all over it. Ironically, comparatively few na tives of the Old North State were looked upon favorably by the State College mentor as he went about his winning ways. He leaned heav ily toward boys from outside North Carolina. In at least one instapce, it is commonly agreed that Case goofed. That was when he passed up New Bern’s own Sonny Russell, who la ter starred for East Carolina and. is recognized as an all-time great in college circles. Case wasn’t by himself, when he missed the boat as a judge of Rus sell's potential. Every other Big Four coach turned thumbs down on Sonny, too, and they all lived to regret it. In the Atlantic Coast Conference as in the Southern, the State Col lege coach has passed up most Tar Heel lads on his wide-flung scout ing expeditions. Nobody can argue with success, however, and by and large it is obvious that Case is a canny judge of basketball ivory. He, of course, no longer is in a class by himself in the Big Four and the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina’s Frank McGuire and oth ers have taken up the slack in re cent years, and from this narrowing of the gap cam® the sort of thrill ing basketball that characterized the latest Dixie Classic. New Bern’s Hayes Clement, now graduated from the Duke Blue Devils, was one of the very few athletes in our immediate vicinity to see sustained action for a Big Four outfit in recent seasons. However, North Carolina basket ball bti the high school level is steadily'improving, and niore and more Tar Heel youngsters are tfpf to qualify for Atlantic Coast com petition. The great majbrity of our high school players won’t go on to star in the college game. Yet, even those who don’t can thank Everett Case for pioneering the excellence of play in the Old North State that made basketball a better game for all performers and all fans. BRUINS COUNT ON HIM—David Wilson, like another Dav id of old, wouldn’t hesitate to tackle a Goliath to win wrest ling honors for New Bern High. Seen here in action, he is a rugged little competitor with a zest for rough going ih any sport he undertakes. Stevens back in town, providing of course you are not on trial dur ing the current two-week criminal term of Craven Superior Court. Former national commander of the American Legion, the Warsaw jurist has a keen sense of humor, and mixes his rulings and sen tences with pertinent comments and advice. For example, one of the wit nesses on the stand this week was a man who has a reputation for getting into fights, with or without provocation. He had been slashed across the neck with an exceeding ly sharp knife, and was testifying against his assailant. Judge Stevens took a look at the wound, and noticed a second knife scar on the throat.
