on Saturday night, December 27th,
at the Hotel Governor Tryon. It
was a well planned semi-formal
dinner dance, and they had a
wonderful time getting together
after a lapse of five years.
Reunions don’t just happen,
which explains why other classes
have never promoted similar
gatherings for New Bern High
alumni. This one got its start way
back in August, and there was
plenty of work to do.
A committee composed of Chris
Grimsley, Gloria Davis Rabon,
Rosemary Romanus, Thomas Smith,
John Hoke and Lee Atkinson was
named to make advance prepara
tion. Some committees don’t func
tion, but this one did an excellent
job.
Classmates everywhere were con
tacted by letter, and asked to sug
gest a date for the reunion. Then
a date and location was decided
upon, and a second letter went out.
Not all of the members were able
to attend, but enough were on hand
to make the undertaking worth
while. Thomas Smith, the Class
president, welcomed the 50 mem
bers and guests. Charles Duffy gave
the invocation, and a turkey dinner
and dancing followed in the Hotel
Governor Tryon ballroom.
Another reunion has already
been planned for 1963, to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of their grad
uation from New Bern High. Mean
while, other classes will undoubted
ly follow the lead of this 1953 class.
We salute the Class of 1953 for
its initiative. With a school spirit
like theirs, New Bern High can
have the reunions it deserves, and
our annual homecomings can be
come outstanding too.
Card Slightly
Late Arriving
All of the mail at the New Bern
post office got delivered rather
promptly during the busy days of
December.
That is, all of the mail except a
postcard addressed to Delores Dud
ley of 408 Bern street. It was sent
to her from her minister while he
was attending a religious confer
ence in California.
Of course, it takes a little time
for mail to get here from Californ
ia, but the postcard mailed Delores
was postmarked during the month
of June in 1948.
It should have arrived earlier, it
seems to us, even by pony express
or mule train. In fact, it apparent
ly did, but by one of those exceed
ingly rare mishaps in the postal
service it got lost behind a sorting
case right in the New Bern post
office.
A clerk discovered it, at long
last, but Delores—now married—
didn’t complain to Washington. She
knows that accidents will happen,
and besides, her own father, Allen
Dudley, has been working at the
New Bern post office himself for
16 years.

BEST FOOT UPWARD—Putting your best foot forward is
important in dancing, like everything else. But when it
comes to leg e;xercises, Annette Lancaster gets the desired
results by pointing her toes to the sky and pedaling an
imaginary bicycle. Incidentally, New Bern’s latest Mirror
Maid has as nice a disposition as any you’ll ever find.—Pho
