Friday, January 16,1959 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page Three Stevie Patterson may not be the most unpredictable nine-year-old in the world, but his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Simmons Patterson, would not hesitate to nominate him for the dubious distinction. - It isn’t that Stevie is a bad kid. Excitement just happens to happen whenever he is anywhere around. Take for example what occurred on ope of the bitter:xold days we’ve had recently. Barging out into the foul weather with the Patterson cat, the young ster decided to give the feline a toeak and snuggle him inside his jacket. It was a kind and consider- ate idea, but when Stevie zipped We need at once several 2 and 3-bedroem henses In or near the cHy. Call MB 7-«175. The cat wasn’t happy, and neither was Stevie, and they were, both cut ting up something fearful. Mrs. Patterson, who loves animals like the rest of the family, tried to res cue the kitty and ^ot bitten in the process. Or. Patterson was home, and was called upon for a consultation. It was all toO apparent that the cat’s tummy wasn’t to be easily extricat ed, so there was just one thing to do. Everybody, Including most espe cially the kitty, took off for the Patterson Clinic. There it was Dr. Patterson’s intention to give the cat a dose of novocaine to ease the pain, and do what was necessary to get him unzipped. The cat, his excitement notwith standing, watched the physician in- teiitly as he prepared to tackle the job. When the needle was ready, Dr. Patterson advanced toward the zipped-up patients 'Terrified, the Patterson pet let out an ungodly yell, leaped out of the jacket and almost bounced off the ceiling. He was already run ning when he landed, and took off for distant points. His tummy remained iiitact, but it won’t ever be cold enough in New Bern again to induce hinf'to snuggle up to anything or any body. In fact, few New Bernians make a practice of it. However, old timers frequently submit Bibles to Craven’s friendly Register of Deeds, Jane Holland, when seeking a birth certificate. It’s mighty acceptable proof, too. Most New Bernians Mis-Pronounce It Notice your fellow New Bernians when they say Massachusetts. Like ly as not they won’t say Massa chusetts at all, but Massa-Tusetts. It isn’t necessarily the uneducat ed who do it. Some of the town’s leading citizens—in many instances college graduates—^are guilty. By the way, how do you say it? IT PAYS TO BE WELL GROOMED.
