Plans are being completed to form a Junior Civitan club at our school, and of course Civitan Citi zenship Essay contest is being held again this year. Craig White was the third place winner in the Stale last year. Any senior who is a bona-fide member of the senior class of any high school, public, private or pa»- rochial, in which a Civitan club is sponsoring the contest is eligible. This year the subject is “Citi zenship—A Process of Gradual Achievement.” Entries shall not contain less than 500 words nor more than 1,200 words. The first prize in the International contest is a $1,200.00 scholarship, the sec ond prize is a $600 scholarship, and third prize is a $250.00 scholar ship. In addition to other prizes, there are awards too in each state. Last year, Linda Craze of Cum berland, Md., was first, while Carl Butler of Collinsville, Ala., and Janet Jones of Lansing, Mich., were second and third respectively. Joseph Nardiello of Waterbury, Con., was fourth; Juanita Epling of Beckley, W. Va., fifth; Richard T. Hull of Oklahoma City, Okla., sixth; Len Truett of Marietta, Ga., seventh; Willana Alsup of Jackson, Miss., eighth; Lillian Brooks of Dayton, 0., ninth; and Carol Irene Scoggins, Kingsport, Tenn., tenth. There were 165 involved in an accident in this age group. As for those between the ages of 35 and 44, there were 156 involved, and 110 more between the ages of 20 and 24. Are women the reckless drivers that men picture them. Definitely not, here in New Bern. There were 524 men and only 162 women who had accidents here during 1958. And, for the sake of the record, it should be added that 514 white drivers had accidents, compared with 162 Negroes. Those are the facts. Only you can improve your chances to stay out of an emergency room or a morgue during the year of 1959, and for years that follow. There were 63 acci dents attributed to that. Improper starts from a parked position caus ed 18 more. What day in the week are you most apt to have your accident? Well, there were 80 on Saturday, 70 on Friday, 56 on Thursday, 49 on Wednesday, 45 on Tuesday, 41 on Monday, and 34 on Sunday. As you can see, from Sunday un til Saturday, without a single ex ception, the days grow progressive ly worse for accidents. The odds are greatest that your own acci dent will come between 10 a.m. and 11 «.m. Almost as treacherous are the hours from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Don’t worry too much about the teen-age driver. Only 65 were in volved in a New Bern accident last year. That’s right, 65 out of 690 drivers who had a collision on local streets.
