In his poem, ‘The Crystal Christ” he contrasted Christ with all the great and good of history. In Shakespeare, there is much to forgive as in Dante, Milton, Lucre tius, Kempie, Epictetus, Emerson, Keats and Tennyson, but in Christ he sees nothing to forgive. “But Thee, but Thee, O Sove reign Seer of Time. But Thee, 0 poet’s poet, wisdom’s tongue. But Thee, O man’s best man, 0 love’s best love. 0 perfect life in perfect labor writ. O all men’s comrade, servant, king or priest—^What “if” or “yet”, what mole, what flaw, what lapse, what real defect, or shadow of defect. What rumor tat tled by an enemy of inference loose, what lack of grace, even in torture’s grasp or sleep’s or death’s. Oh, what amiss may I for give in Thee. Jesus, Thou, good Paragon, Thou Crystal Christ?” During the War Between the States, Lanier was captured and spent four months in Look-Out Prison. Then, on his steamboat voyage to Fortress Monroe, he was in the hold of the boat, almost dead. An old friend and her little daughter from Montgomery, Ala., were on the boat. They were led to the crude stalls provided for cattle, but now crowded with poor, human wretches. The colonel assisted them in get ting Lanier to their cabin. Fellow prisoners passed him along over their heads, for there was no room to carry him through. After medication, he revived, asked for his flute and began play ing. After a few notes, a yell of joy came up from the shivering wretches below, who knew now that their comrade was alive. This Cup of Coffee Was Not for HIM One of New Bern’s churches was having a coffee hour recently, be fore Sunday school took in. A man who happened to be a member of an adult class arrived late, but was offered a cup so he could catch up with everybody “I don’t believe I want it,” he said after some hesitation. “The last time we bad a coffee hour it kept me awake during the morn ing sermon.” Give Your Favorite Furniture a New Lease on Life. Il’s no secret that Charlie Mc- Sorley, one of New Bern’s retired postal employees, can bake a pie that will literally melt in your mouth. His specialty is lemon (his own favorite too) but if you like mince, that’s extra special too. Charlie didn’t start out to be a genius in the kitchen, although he is happy now when he is puttering around with pots and pans. The stroke put him up to it, and after that he found himself in something of a rut. The trend got underway when the first of six little MeSorleys was born, to bring joy supreme to Charlie’s Irish heart. He had ar ranged in advance to take his an nual two-weeks vacation from the postoffice the moment the brat arrived. Hiring a practical nurse to tend his wife and youngun, MeSorley tackled the cooking chores himself. Each time a new baby arrived^ he followed the same pattern. By the time the sixth one showed up, he was a full-fledged chef, and could stir up a meal fit for a king — or better still, fit for an Irishman. “I could always tell, back in the bedroom, when things were going right in the kitchen,”’ says Mrs. MeSorley. “He whistled while he worked, just like Walt Disney’s dwarfs in Snow White. When he stopped whistling, I knew he had come up with a failure.” Charlie’s wife was too smart, and too grateful, to get nosey. “He would never mention the failures to me,” she recalls, “and I didn’t mention them either. I still don’t know what flopped.” Quite a few New Bernians would consider rearing six children a rather high price to pay, to get a husband indoctrinated with the finer points of culihary art. But the MeSorleys like kids as well as pies. 6-Room Home on the Corner of Rhem Street and Country Club Road. $2500. Roy O.
