Page Five I As Se«n in The Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events Eventually, it is hoped, tennis courts can be made available at New Bern high school for those students who lean toward this par ticular sport. When that day does come, it is not unlikely that some of our local athletes will excel at the game. As it is, we have failed for gen erations to produce a tennis star, simply because facilities and in-, struction for proper development have never been available. Cham pions, or even serious contenders just don’t happen. They are usual ly a product of favprable sur roundings, coupled with keen com petition from other aspirants in the community from which they bail. For example, the excellent golf course at the New Bern Golf and County Club enabled George Smith, Jr., to blossom into a real champion while still in high school. Ken Worthington, Jr., who later became a pro, polished up his game there, too. Others less outstanding have become suffi ciently adept at the sport to ably represent their school in North eastern Conference competition. There is no reason, of course, why New Bernians can’t disting uish themselves in any and all SEPTIC TANKS Installed Serviced WE CLEAN SEPTIC TANKS Thomas B. Marsh Co., Inc. New Bern, N. Some one has aptly said that an expert is a fool a long way from home, and"»one of our failings here has always been the attitude that somebody somewhere else has spe cial talents that aren’t to be found in our own town. Admittedly, the law of averages is against New Bern coming up with truly great athletes year in and year out. However, the more fertile we have our soil, so to speak, the better are our chances for success in the world of sports. If the soil is fertile enough, and we plant our seeds early, good athletes and good ball 'clubs can occur with remarkable frequency. Kinston has demonstrated that re peatedly in recent years '^ith its fine basketball program. Stars graduate, but new stars come along to take their place. Top - Selling Discs 1. Offsetting this rise, however, was a drop from the September totals in appraisal requests for both new construction and existing dwellings. This is evidence of a continued tightening in the supply of mort gage'money for GI loans. VA said. During October, VA received 26,- 594' applications for home loan guaranty, an increase of 7.7 per cent over September’s total of 24,- 687." GI starts in October climbed 2.2 per cent to 14,676 from September’s total of 14,355. Appraisal requests for existing structures dropped 13.6 per cent from September’s 12,442 to 10,751 in October. Q—I have a permanent plan World War II GI insurance policy. It has lapsed because I let my grace period for payment of the premium go by without paying. What must I do to reinstate the policy? A—GI permanent plan insurance may be reinstated at any time by payment of all back premiums, plus interest. You must also meet VA’s health requirements.
