Page Six THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, February 6, 1959 State College Experts Look At 1959 Tobacco Situation In recent weeks North Carolina tobacco growers have shown in creasing concern for the future of their crop. Anxious to supply the demands of all segments of the to bacco trade, more and more farm ers are re-examining varieties that are available for 1959. Some farmers are finding them selves in a tough spot, however. They want to grow an “old-line” variety of tobacco, but in many cases certain diseases in their soil make this impossible. Agriculture Extension Serv ice, raises the following point for consideration: Why not plant part of the crop in a disease-resistant variety which has “old-line” characteristics, and part of the crop in a disease re sistant variety which does not have “old-line” characteristics? This would be particularly feasi ble, Bennett said, where a tobacco farm is tended by two or more ten ants, or where a farmer has to bacco in two or more tracts. Disease resistant varieties that are similar in many respects to the so-called “old-line” varieties are Coker 156, S. C. 58, Oxford 1-181, Vesta 5, and Buyers’ Choice. The leaf type of N.C. 73 is similar to some of the “old-line” varieties. Plant pathologists report that Coker 156, S. C. 58 and N. C. 73 have high levels of resistance to Black Shank. Oxford 1-181 is mod erately resistant to Black Shank, while Vesta 5 and Buyers’ Choice have low levels bf Black Shank re sistance. In addition, N. C. 73 has moderate resistance to Fusarium Wilt. In some cases, where a suitable long rotation has been practiced and Black Shank is not too much of a problem, a variety with low level of resistance may be used. However, in the Black Shank “hot spots,” a highly resistant variety, such as Coker 156, S. C. 58 and N. Call us for free esfimafes on local and long distance mov ing. W. Vesta 5 is a medium- high yielder, while Oxford 1-181 is a low yielder. For any farmer planning to switch to a new or different varie ty for 1959, Bennett has a word of caution: “Go slow,” he said, “on any new variety. Learn how to handle it, and know that the ijew variety has good acceptability in the trade be fore going all out.” SPACE AGE Malibu, Calif.—Sheriff’s officers here logged something new in the way of travel hazards recently; a collision involving a horse and an airplane. Robert Goodyear, 49, glided in for a landing in an open field after his light plane ran out of gas. A horse galloped into the craft’s path and they collided. The horse was killed, Goodyear’s plane was wrecked, and the pilot and his wife, Mary, 46, suffered NO DRIVE All the world’s a stage, and a great many people will be under studies all their lives. The group of tobaccos listed by Bennett as having some of the “old- line” characteristics all have fairly pointed leaves, with considerable body. The chemical composition of these tobaccos^ is generally within the usuable range, and their flavor and aroma ranges from medium to ROMANTIC APPEAL GONE Budapest — Sailing on the Dan ube is hardly as romantic as the songs would have you believe—if you set out from Comriiunist Ro mania. The exception reads as follows: “For soils fumigated to control ne matodes, the fertilizer for flue-cur ed tobacco should contain at least 25 per cent of the total nitrogen in the nitrate form.” In previous years, it was believed that one form of nitrogen was good as another for tobacco. How ever, recent studies have shown that, where land has been fumi gated, flue-cured tobacco needed at least one-fourth of its nitrogen in nitrate form. By applying a portion of the ni trogen in nitrate form, scientists for the N. C. Agriculture Experiment Station have been able to increase tobacco yields by 10 to 20 per cent. The fertilizer recommendations for 1959 cover about every crop pown in Noi’th Carolina. They also include lawns and ornamentals. Soil tests are the best way to find out what fertilizer is needed.
