Kula Hoops Jom
Dave Crockett Junk
^We had almost forgotten that
there ever was such a thing as a
hiUa hoop, until we saw one the
other day on a pile of trash in
front of a New Bern home.
Try though we did, we couldn’t
recall the last time we Encountered
a child with one of the gadgets in
our neighborhood.
Undoubtedly, there are thousands
of homes in New Bern and coastal
Carolina that, still have hula hoops
in .the closet, basement or attic.
They’re the. same homes that have
Davey Crockett stuff that no kid
would darfe drag out in front of
his playmates.

nings for social security in several
ways.
(1) If your gross income from ag
ricultural self-employment is not
more than $1,800, you may count
as your net farm earnings either
your actual net or two-thirds of
your farm gross income;
(2) If your gross farm income is
more than $1,800, and your net
farm earnings are less than $1,200,
you may use either your actual net
or $1,200.
(3) If your gross farm income is
more than $1,800, and your net
farm earnings are $1,200 or more,
you MUST USE the actual amount
of your net earnings. '
DIR added that use of the option
enables farmers with gross income
as low as $600 to obtain social se
curity protection for themselves in
their oW age and for their sur
vivors in case of death. However,
he emphasized that regardless of
the way in which you figure your
net earnings, you must have net
earnings of at least $400 (from
farming alone, or in combination
with other SE earnings) in order to
get social security credit for the
year.
Requests for information regard
ing taxes due and tax returns forms
should be directed to the internal
Revenue Office at Raleigh. Ques
tions concerning the old-age, sur
vivors, and disability insuranct
program will be answered by your
social security office at Raleigh
In addition to the revised option
al method, the law provides social
security coverage to some farm
owners who receive cash or crop
shares from tenant farmers. If the

newspapers and ■ radio ■ a new
game for holiday motorists
called “Spot the Amateur.”
Purpose of the game was to
urge motorists to avoid contact
with, amateur drivers. Since no
driver wants to be considered a
novice, the game also deterred
motorists from pulling “ama
teur driving" boners.
At another Christmas sea
son, the Council prepared a
travel time list to various
holiday vacation spots for use
by newspapers and radio sta
tions. Normal driving times
were first determined, and
then additional time was add
ed to allow for increased holi
day traffic. To arrive safely
at their destinations, drivers
. were urged to follow the time
schedules.
Another Christmas project of
the Los Angeles safety experts
is to place on every restaurant
table and counter a sign reading
“For' Holiday Safety — make
that ‘one for the road’ coffee.”
Through these special Christ
mas safety programs, the Los
Angeles Safety Council spreads
