Page Six THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, February 13, 1959 [i c slate colleae It is not too late to make a reso lution for the new year. I can’t think of a better one than resolving to do a better job of inaect and dis ease control in 1959. Here are some pests we can control at this season of the year: Bag worm on Juniper—examine your plants, remove and destroy the bags. Sprays and dusts are not effective at this season. Red Cedar “apple”—this is an alternate host disease which spends the winter stage on the red cedar For the best In wheel balancingi wheel alignments motor tune*ups brake, generator, starter repairs, Harvey Moore. . Destroying the brown “apples” now will destroy the source of in fection and protect your apple trees and those of your neighbors. This is especially important in com mercial apple growing areas. White Peach Scale—a number of specimens of privet hedge have been brought in showing heavy in festations of this troublesome in sect. It also attacks the peach (thus the name) and is difficult to con trol. On privet, spray with 3 per cent dormant oil. Make two appli cations two weeks apart. Do not use oil when the mean temperature is below 50 degrees F. Cottony-Cushion Scale—This is a sucking insect and is especially bad on pittosporum and gardenia (Cape Jasmine). Spray with 2 per cent dormant oil for best results. One thorough spraying should give good results. Observe same precautions as far as temperature is concerned. Camellia Leaf Scale—Spray with 2 per cent white-oil emulsion. This season (dormant or resting) is the best time to control this insect. Ob serve temperature precautions. For scale insects on ash, oak and maple use 3 per cent dormant oil spray at the rate of 3 gallons of oil to 100 gallons of water. Observe temperature precautions. Moles destroy few plants or bulbs by feeding on them; however, they raise unsightly ridges and may up root plants while searching for food, mostly animal matter. Trap ping is best for small areas. Larger areas can be cleared by removing the small animal life on which they feed. Chlordane applied at the rate of one-fourth pound to 1,000 square feet is usually effective. Veferoni News Over 5,000,000 World War H and Korean, conflict veterans who hold GI life insurance may now attach a new type of total disability in come provision to their policies in return for a small additional prem ium cost, Veterans Administratiod announced. HINTS TO HOMEMAKERS The new type of GI policy Elder was authorized by Public liiiw 85- 678, effective November 1, 1958. Under the new law, VA explain ed, policyholders who become total ly disabled from any cause be fore age 60 and while the new rider is in effect will receive an in come of $10 per month for each $1,- 000 face amount of the GI policy. Previous maximum was $5 per month. Payments under the clause begin after the total disability has existed for six consecutive months and con tinue for the duration of the disa bility, regardless of its length, VA said. HmV / YOU SUU;jCRIBED TO THE MIRROR YET? You'll Find a Variety of Tropical Fish at Pittman's Aquarium 137 Middle Street No payment may be made for disabilities incurred after age 60, and no premium charge is made for this benefit after that date. If the veteran is in good health and un der 60, the rider may be added to any National Service Life Insur ance (NSLI) policy, except for a limited number sold to service-dis abled veterans since April, 1953, VA said. COLD WEATHER TIME FOR CARBOHYDRATES—Is cold weath er hard to take? Research shows that carbohydrate foods are cold weather protectors. Best known are: Fruits, most vegetables, breads, cereals, milk. Be sure bread and cereal are enriched or whole grain. SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN MENU PLANNING—For a change of menu, switch the high pro« tein food of the meal from the main course to the dessert course. Add preserved ginger, chocolate chips, or plump raisins to baked custard. Tasty bread puddings are good selections, too. Angel food cake or meringues, teamed with fruit or ice oream are bargains in high quality protein as are cheese cakes and baked Alaskas. Pasteur Street Dial ME 7-6909 Night: ME 7-3820 Of the 5,650,000 holders of eli gible NSLI policies, the agency esti mated that at least 5,000,000 could qualify for the rider. There are currently 85,500 veterans who have the old $5 rider attached to their policies. Those who meet the re quirements may increase their cov erage to the new $10 limit for a very small boost over what they are now paying in added prem iums. Premium cost of the $10 total disability provision varies accord ing to the policyholder’s age, type of policy, and its face amount. A typical example would be that of a 40-year-old veteran with a $10,- 000 NSLI policy, who would pay $1.60 per month for the rider. Un der its provision, he would receive $100 per month in policy benefits if he became totally disabled. Payments to the veteran under the rider do not reduce the face amount of the policy. Q—Does my GI home have to be paid off in full before I can sell my home? A-^Not necessarily. The buyer may assume your GI loan, if he is willing, if your payments are up to date, and if VA determines he is a satisfactory credit risk. Q—Is a “peacetime” veteran with a disability rated 50 per cent en^ titled to’ more compensation for dependents? A—Yes. Peacetime veterans rat ed 50 per cent or more disabled may be entitled to additional com pensation for a wife, minor chil dren, or dependent parents. TEEN-AGERS NEED GOOD BREAKFAST—It’s foolhardy for high school students to trade their breakfast for a little extra morning sleep. It is practically impossible to make up the food missed at breakfast by eating snacks or “ov creating” at other meals. Breakfast should provide at least one-fourth of the teen-ager’s daily Intake. That mid-morning hunger feeling among teen-agers can be stopped with a good serving of eggs at breakfast. Because high protein foods are slowly digested, hunger comes less quickly after eating eggs for breakfast. Recent Worm Days Sets Thumbs Itchfng Recent warm days that were sand wiched in among the cold spells and rain have put New Bernians in the notion to take to fheir gai- dens. Mowing the lawn and pulling weeds in July and August is no fun, but balminess in February makes spading a lark. Like the man who likes a Sog, there’s something appealing alwut someone who considers it worths while to grow flowers and shrubs, and coax a hesitant lawn into a state of verdant beauty. ‘ New Bern can be a lovelier place just because of you. RENEW YOUR SUBSCRIPTION Much of the ground work for health in later life is laid during the teen-age period. It is often im possible to compensate for nutri tional damage incurred during the teens. EXPERTS AND HAWAII Honolulu—William F. Quinn, of Hawaii, says he has tried without success to solve one of the most baffing problems of his administra tion—how to pronounce Hawaii. Is it “Ha-vy-ee” or is it “Ha-wy- ee?” “The experts,” says Quinn, “don’t agree themselves.” We need at once several 2 and 3-bedroom homes in or near the city. Call ME 7-6175.
